Water Storage Ideas for long duration Camping

Hello Folks!

I was curious to what everyone has come up with for water supply for an outdoor sink? we will have a road shower but obviously limited use if your using for more than just showering. I was thinking something like the below photo! I have a decked system so that also reduces the size or design. Lets see what you are all running!! (Photo stolen off the Interweb)

 

I use a 6-gal aluminum tank like shown on the passenger's side of the bed. Battery powered 12V pump for the hose...

 

I like these, but they seem awfully expensive for what you get. I wonder how hard it would be to build one...

I like this system as it is super lean and doesn't take up a lot of space. However with having the decked system in the box of my truck it wouldn't work.

 

Water jug, it's easy to take out and clean/disinfect. I've got several styles that I've picked up over the years, just pick a style that works for the way you pack. I've got bladders I carry out west so that I can add additional water if I think I may need it (MSR Dromedary bags).

 

When I use a cooler to supplement my fridge, I like to freeze water bottles instead of using ice. I can factor the water into my drinking supply and it never water logs my food as it melts. I can drink the melted water bottles towards the end of my trip. Any food by that point will fit in my fridge and the cooler becomes storage space for random stuff. For most of my other water I just use a 5 gallon military water jug.

Hmm, does anyone make on that I can store in the spare tire location with the hook? Kinda like a donut water tank?

 

Finally got my hot water heater case mounted up. First trip out was last weekend. Didn't actually hook up the propane, but was super easy to fill water bottles, wash hands, dishes, etc. Was great not having to move the jugs, just the hose!

 

Couldya just fit something like this down there? Dimensions of this one might fit.

While it's far from elegant, it was only $45, couldn't be easier to set up, and I can move the jug and pump to another buddy's truck/car if we're carpooling for the weekend. Had it for 6 months now and it hasn't eaten the dirt yet!

 

Has anybody created a used water reclamation system? Have you created a way to filter? When boiling water for cooking do you cook the food directly in the water or do you cook the food in sealed bags and save the water? Do you plan for minimal water use in your pre trip plan? Do you consider potential water sources during trip planning? Water is critical for human survival but how important is it for anything else? I find to many people do not learn enough from thru hikers on how to plan. We fall victim to the perspective that since we are traveling via a vehicle, we just find ways to pack/carry more.

 

thru hikers have a plan because they have a single itinerant focus and finite carry capacity. we didn't buy 4wheel rigs to gram shave, and nothing says dinner like infused plastic chili, lol.
You count the heads going in the truck, count the days you are out, multiply by your magic number and throw the requisite number of 7 gallon jugs in the bed, tell everyone to sit down, belt in, shut up and hold on!

Six gallons each and you can stack 3 in the same space as a stock spare. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on a 2-pack for an upcoming long-haul trip.

 

I looked into these as I no longer carry a spare in the original location. My only thought/concern was each unit holds a little over 50 pounds of water plus weight of the tank. Probably not an issue but certainly a consideration.

 

Same, which is why I wouldn't want any more than 2 tanks in that space. The spare hoist MIGHT be okay with 3 if you're not wheeling at all. Maybe...

 

That's a neat little setup. Do you know if you can hardwire the pump and just keep it plugged in for a more permanent installation?

 

I'd bet against it. The pump has an on/off button and, if you were to run it continuously, I'm sure it would burn out.

It'll last me a whole weekend of usage plus some though on a single charge. Never needed an additional battery yet!
