Weird noise after routine oil change, thoughts?

    Hi Tacoma world!

So i've run into a bit of a problem. My Tacoma needed an oil change today so I purchased the new filter (OEM), new oil, and got to work. After I finished, I turned my tacoma on to run the oil through the engine but now the truck is making a weird noise. The noise sounds like either a whirring or high pitched squeal. I'm no mechanic so I can't diagnose or have any clue of what it might be.

The only thing that I can think of is that when I went to put the new oil in, I dribbled a bit into the engine bay. I cleaned up what I saw dribbled on the hoses and such. I also saw that a lot of it went all the way down to the skid plate (cleaned that up too). Only thing that I can think of is that some of the oil got in between the belts or a part of the radiator fan?

Things that I noted: 1) I have not lost power. Engine seems to run well (only really moved it around so i could park it in my garage but worked fine) 2) I made sure that I did not accidentally drain the transmission fluid. I triple checked and I am positive I drained the oil pan. 3) The sound seems to reduce after the engine runs for a little bit. It sounds like the motor warms up, settles, and the sound doesn't go away but isn't as loud. 4) checked the blinker fluid--all good there.

In any case, here is a video I took of it.

    Many thanks in advance!

Pop the belt off a tensioner and start it for a couple of seconds. Bet you got more oil on the belt then you think. Did you have the A/C or defrost on when you were running it?

I'll def give that a go tomorrow morning. I was really thinking the same--more than likely oil that I can't see making the belt wobble or run funny.

No I didn't have the AC/Defroster on when I was running it.

Sounds like a slipping belt. Might be from being oiled from the spill

I think it is an empty beer can swirling around in the vortex in your bed. Slow down pouring the oil into the funnel. Take your time. Problem solved.

Try spraying the belt with “Simple Green” and a garden hose.

Hopefully you didn't spill oil on the tensioner. FSM says that can cause noise and the need to replace the tensioner. I cover the area underneath the oil filler with an old towel to catch any spills because of this caution. See attached.

There are tools to help control the draining and filling of oil. Motivx Funnels for filling and Form A Funnel to help guide draining filter housings are two of them. Google for more options.

Find some friends and practice with their cars and trucks. Practice make perfect.

    Good luck.

You checked the fluid level on the dipstick, all good there? Probably oil on the belt. You for sure got some on the belt?

The Motivx Funnel is the real deal. Mine fits my '17 Taco, '17 Rav4, '16 Rolla, '99 Rolla, and '97 Taco.

Game changer for the one handed, crossed eyed folks.

    Get you one!

Spilling oil is easily done with most funnels since, Toyota did not see to make the oil fill spout level...

Hasn't failed me yet. It can even support a mostly drained 5 quart jug when properly balanced :D

Fancy!!! I just use a small top quart oil container with the bottom cut out. Yeah yeah, I'm a dinosaur in a digital world.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks!!! took the belt off and cleaned it. Put it back on and the noise is gone now. I'm definitely going to invest into that funnel that screws on. The funnel that I used sat too far from my jug and when the oil hit it, it just bounced off and into the engine bay.
