He is taking as big of a guess as we are as to what is wrong, as stated earlier, i would just take it to his shop and tell him he needs to find out what the real problem is, any good shop is gonna be more than willing to figure it out. if i had just installed it i would absolutely want to take a look and make sure i didnt screw anything up.

    Jason has said it all.
Backing plates are extremely easy to tweak.
But it needs to be looked at.
Rocks sound like rocks. Backing plates sound like backing plates. The sound is no where near the same. If this is a backing plate and it's fixed you will never forget that sound.
To say it's rocks and not look at it is irresponsible.
Dam i hate stuff like this.

Yeah trust me it is so frustrating, very embarrassing to be driving around a slightly lifted tacoma that looks nice that has a horrible sound.

Taking it in tomorrow, wish me luck guys...

    Question:

Would lowering the setting in the front from 2.5 to 1.75 would get rid of that noise and solve some problems?

He got it lifted, and the shop messed something up. The comment about changing the setting from 2.5 to 1.75 is referring to the 5100's, its a preload setting that would require a spring compressor to change...

Just wondering why OP isn't taking into account what ToyotaTech said. He is, after all, a Toyota Tech. :)

I don't think you read the whole thread. You and the OP are speculating on a forum rather than checking for himself.

    A) Took truck into the shop for lift, no noises.
    B) Shop installed Lift
    C) OP Picked up truck, noticed noises.

    Reasonable evaluation: Shops fault
Resolution: Return to shop for evaluation.

If OP thought he could fix their mistake he would have. If it wasn't their mistake, the shop will tell him that.

I speak from my personal experience, we are held accountable for our work, if a customer says there is a noise after a repair, i would do everything possible to figure it out, if its my fault we fix it, if not we still fix it, but they pay. very simple, as myself and others have already stated, the easiest thing for the op to do is take the truck back to the shop that did the install.

Once the op stated that he is not very technical, it seemed like a no brainer to just take it back to the shop. I don't know, i could be reading all this wrong.

Well if they don't find anything, would lowering the setting down one notch at 1.75 make the problems go away?

I am hoping that I don't have to pay for anything extra...

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Nothing, since you don't have a front diff.
    NO.

You need to just take the truck back to where the lift was installed and have them verify the noise, then inspect their work like Jason said. Repeated posting and asking questions on how to fix something that you're not even sure what the problem is isn't going to get you anywhere. Lastly, you haven't even gotten it aligned yet. I wouldn't be surprised if the alignment takes away the noise.

You've been pointed in the right direction so go and get it done already.

jesus, your backplate doesnt require you to even jack up the truck/remove the wheel. Stick a long screw driver through the spokes, and press on the backplate, NOT the disc. Press all around it, make sure its not touching, push a little hard. easy fix.

also like above posted, alignment needs fixing!

pads dont easily bend, will break first, but they didnt have to remove the caliper, or the rotar for the suspension lift.

The bearings, maybe, but not likely.

    Alignment yes, definetly a possibility.

    And the verdict is in!

So took it to the place today to have the problem diagnosed. They looked at it, and poked the insides of the front wheels with a screwdriver. They poked around for a minute, then test drove it and BAM! Problem and sound is gone!

I was like, dude, all that noise just to be fixed by poking around.... Alignment was done today too, so now my car is in functioning condition! Thanks to you guys for your help. Sorry for being such a newbie.
