Well, solder has been completed, and tested in my Tacoma. Worked fantastic.

Thanks. Just came back in from getting it all hooked up and tested. Can't wait for the new/improved version, but this fix will work just fine.

I was just thinking that with those boards you bought it wouldn't be too difficult at all to build up a two-wire unit that simply plugs into the back of the mirror similar to the "universal" unit that Dongar sells.

Thanks for the offer, but I really don't have plans to put a dash cam in our other vehicles at this time. But you did a great job finding that board, and for dirt cheap! Building a two-pin universal adapter is the easy part after the leg work of finding that board is done.

One way to go about it would be to simply identify the +12 and GND pins on the existing connector, push out the pins, tap into them and push them back in. Connect power to the board and just plug back into the mirror. I think those pins are well documented here on the board somewhere.

Would the adapter still work without the mirror? I don't plan on installing the homelink mirror but I do want to install a Garmin mini. It would be nice to utilize the power connection in the overhead if it's there already.

You don't need the homelink mirror, only an auto dimming mirror. That is if you want to use the Amazon plug. Others have said that most trucks have the power source in the headliner you just have to find it. I can't confirm this though

Conceivably you could refer to this new thread to figure out which switched 12vdc power wires you would need to connect to in the headliner. Then you could hook up the device that @robnpatb found on Amazon to provide a USB (power only) port behind your existing rearview mirror.

hmmm. robnpatb found the step down board with the female usb connection. https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetai...9G3X3ZVtk9YePM%2BgWP2BTIIleQQaIE3OJOHWb4u1g== looks like one side of the 12 pin connection used behind the rear view mirror. i'm having a bit of difficulty finding the other side of the 12 pin connector? anyone have an idea on where to get one? maybe its the other side of this connection?

id imagine it wouldnt be too difficult to wire one up, especially if rob is nice enough to show which wires are connected on the factory board. as far as an upgraded one from the original company, chances are they are using a different step down board, maybe a smaller form factor or a bigger capacitor?

could be a fun project and could save a buck or two.

The datasheet in the Mouser link has all the part numbers for the male connector, the female connector, and the pins. But you would have to make careful physical measurements then order the parts to be sure they actually fit the Tacoma mirror.

The connectors are cheap. But they're gonna sock it to you for that reel of 7000 pins . . . :spending:

I wouldn't be brave enough to do this on my own. I'm not a electronics genius and have no clue what I would do. I'd be afraid of frying electronics on my Tacoma, so that is why I prefer to pay someone else to do the R & D :D. I'm actually surprised I found that USB board (and it actually worked, although I had to 'outsource' the soldering :p)

With the proper connectors, the board you found, the right crimping tool, and that reel of 7000 pins... it would be an easy project. All of the necessary connections would go straight through pin-to-pin from the male connector to the female connector. The two wires that carry the switched 12vdc would be split out to power the board. Maybe the pins are available on ebay in a lesser qty.

Actually there's two. Because you would need the male pins as well as the female sockets.

    SNA3CW-A021T-0.64 (Male)

    SA1T-A03T-M064 (Female)

And there are two different varieties of the female terminal depending on "conductor length"
