I am ok with the power too but I wish they would come out with a TSB for the throttle input. I feel that there is more power available in the lower RPM's but it needs a reprogram. I miss the old days of a cable throttle. Those were easy to adjust.

You guys need to read how Atkinson cycles work. The intake valves are allowed to hang open much longer than normal during the initial stages of the compression stroke. This is supposed to keep the crankshaft spinning without any drag or resistance to it's momentum. It's like they are delaying the ability to generate compression until later in the comp stroke.. this is only supposed to happen under light load situations mostly.. when it sees your foot ask for more power the pcm throws the late closing valve strategy out the window and goes into power mode.. closing the intake valve earlier ( like a normal engime) to get some compression back. It is basically using an intake valve timing strategy that allows for variable rates of compression. They are very weird! Read about them! That is why the power band seems so strange compared to most of the engines we are used to. This valve lag is suppose d to only happen during light load situations but it spills over into the situations when you floor it and (reasonably) expect to have some power or at the very least some kickdown LOL...

The stubborn shift strategy programmed into the transmission doesn't help either.. but is a symptom of the fact that the engine has a less than typical power band..

Not sure what the power problems are, my moms gots a 17' Highlander with the same Atty 3.5L and 8-speed auto, and that thing rips and pulls the hills awesome at low rpm, and it weighs more. It does shift a lot though.

190,000 16's sold, and like 50 people on here dislike them, not including the people with legitimate issues.

Only thing I dislike about mine is the Billy 5100's in the front.

Coming from a 2nd gen owner... the 2nd gen Tacoma has consistently been labeled terrible on road.

If you really think a 2nd gen is even close in any way to a 3rd gen you're are seriously crazy man!

Op, get a 3rd gen, I can assure you that you won't regret it. I've owned many trucks from diesels to 400hp 1/2 tons and this Tacoma is amazing!

The 2nd gen never had initial quality reports as poor as the 3rd gen does.

This is just one of many that show that a 2nd gen is not perfect by any means according to "reviewers"

Archaic just means old, and in Toyota's case add reliable. That is really not a problem such as an oil leak for example. (no to low fluid fills, etc..)

Indeed. Never implied perfect ... no such thing with man made machines. I suspect there was low filled (never need filled) 5 speed trans too, just not as many complaints as there are now.

Have you seen the JD Power, Consumer Affairs, and Consumer Reports reviews? They gave the 3rd gen poor marks (2 stars out of 5) I do not recall the 2nd gen ever getting scores that low. Did you see the 2nd gen only get 2 stars from a major review source?

No, but I've seen these that came up right away with a google search. Maybe these reviews don't count huh? Seem pretty good overall if you ask me.

Haha J.D power is practically owned by GM. They've been all over their nuts for years man.

Regardless, I still showed 3 legitimate reviews that prove my point.

You're not going to like the fact that it doesn't include a built in ice chest under the bed. But you still have time to make the right choice.
