I know that I could do a dash swap on a newer dash but I heard/saw they could be inaccurate plus tracking my mileage is important to me so idk what I should do

After market tach will also work in most cases you need an adapter so the truck ignition can talk to the after market tachometer .

Depending just what want this can be an easy $200.00 plus project I am sure China built parts can be found cheaper.

Why can you not record your mileage with a gauge cluster swap and go from there.

I can`t recall I may have seen something on how to reset the odometer someplace.

find a cluster from an ext cab 2.7 and have it programmed to your mileage.

then again you are a '97 so everything is cable driven? not sure how that works with the 2.4. I'm pretty sure you can swap the odo to a new cluster

My old first gen, I bolted an aftermarket tach into the plastic of the steering wheel column and hooked up a few wires to something under the glove box. It was really easy but it’s been 8 years, don’t remember too much. Something like this but smaller and it was blocking the temperature gauge

On my 89 I just took an SR5 cluster with a tach and swapped it. Everything was there for it all to work, simply plug and play. Mileage was off then of course.

Only the speedo is cable driven, which both clusters utilize, the tach and the rest are electric.

Just swap the dash cluster. I did that in my old 5 lug. I did the swap in the parking lot of the wrecking yard to make sure it fit.

If tracking mileage is important, but write down the mileages of each cluster, and make the conversion. Document it, and take pictures of each cluster before/after installation.

If you sell it, just make sure you check the box on the DMV paperwork that says the indicated mileage is not the actual mileage.
