Nope no 5.29 for me - I run stock tires and no heavy additions - got the 4.88 for pulling my camper. I will dm you on who to go to for gears and Tune.

ahhh and you know, i don't want to thread jack either.

here's how mine played out back when i thought CAI would do any good.

    Me: MAF sensor failed
Toyota: warranty denied, MAF is fine, issue is due to CAI
    Me: Not due to CAI
    T: yes it was
    Me: Prove it
    T: it's obvious
CAI Lawyer: Toyota where is your data?
    T: *ignore
T: Not our problem. It's due to CAI.
Lawyer: *cease and desist letter due to threat to brand name, sues Toyota. Cites MM, warrantor cannot prove aftermarket part caused fault.
    T: *pays me, pays them

you would probably have bigger issues with Icon shocks vs the gears :anonymous: (they aren’t that good for the $$ and their service sucks according to many on TW) I love my 4.88’s and get great mileage (but also OVtuned).

keep in mind it will help with shifting a bit, but the stock tune is not tuned for 4.88’s, so the shifting is not optimized like one would get with OVtune, not to mention the downright power gains.

Also, the MT with 4.3’s pushes higher RPMs per gear than the AT with 4.88’s. So, depending on if you have an AT or MT the result will be drastically different.
The AT utilizes 5th and 6th as overdrive gears. If you are running wide 33’s (285’s+) you probably won’t notice as much as you would think with 4.8&’s, but they are a safe bet. If you want as much torque as possible 5.29’s may be a better option, but at the cost of mpgs

At 75mph with 32’s and 4.88’s I sit at 2250 RPMs in 6th on the freeway and get 16-19mpg at that speed. Hope this helps.

    one more thing:
If you get the gears make sure you are diligent and due the correct break in procedure with 85w-140 (non-synthetic) gear oil. Visit: https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/ft-1479-new-gear-break-in-procedure.html

4.88s, no regrets. But I'm only on a 265 tire and have a few hundred pounds of extra weight. Nothing too crazy yet.

I lifted, regeared to 4.88's, then ovtuned. The only thing I would do different is lift, ovtune, then regear if necessary. 4.88's aren't a fix all for the transmission shift issues but helps, I'm on 32's. IMO, if your truck is stock (NO topper, skids, bumpers etc:) with little added weight JUST with 33's 4.88's will be just ok, if you keep adding weight or due some heavy wheeling 5.29's are a must!

Thanks for all of this info. Now I’m leaning more towards 5.29’s over the 4.88’s. Would there be a downside to going 5.29 right off the bat?

Before you do anything read the 4.88 and 5.29 mega threads! Everybody's truck is different so you need to find someone with your current setup OR future setup and see what they are running. Just like different trucks there are different opinions on this issue.

With my 4.88's I get right at 20MPG + or_ a gallon or two depending on the terrain/speed.

Nitro told me that 5.29's were recommended for AT's and 4.88's for MT's. So I went with 4.88's. That and my OVTune and I'm a real happy camper. :D

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a mechanical issue due to regearing in the 3rd gen section. And we all know how much people like to complain here.

You also run 35in very aggressive MTs with beadlocks so I don't know if you're a good litmus test for acceptable street manners:rofl:

Anyway OP, here's what Nitro themselves have to say about gear sizing:
