Those are there for the factory tonneau cover.

The rail would go below the holes. Where the screw/bolt is holding it on, just below in the middle between the 2 holes.

It happens. I just thought I would try and clarify the best I could where the rail went vs the bed cover holes.

Maybe those are the holes causing the howling some whiners talk about.

Yes, the center screw shown is the middle one for bolting up a header rail. The one from the 2nd gen bolts right up, great inexpensive mod. Get part # PT278-35100-BH, I paid $33 plus tax at my local dealer.

The two holes above are for a bracket for the factory tonneau, as mentioned above.

Can one install the front bed rail if one already has the factory tonneau installed, or are they mutually exclusive?

The front bed rail will work fine with the factory tonneau. Here's mine.

I have a bakflip tonneau cover and it works just fine. There is no reason why the factory one shouldn't work. Only problem with the factory tonneau is that it can't be folded next to the back window. Which would make using the front rail a bit difficult.

Correct. Though the factory cover comes off really easily. I do wish they'd done a fold-up-vertical arrangement like the Bakflip but it hasn't been a big deal for me so far.

Rotopax makes a mount for tacomas for gas tanks. The front rail would be a good place for it.

I need to remember to pull that front rail off my 15 before I get the 17.

Speaking of front rail, my Tacoma didn't come with one. Does anyone have a part # so I can order one? Or does someone have one they pulled off and want to sell?
