Wish Tacoma offer it...Age is one reason, why is there so many aftermarket types steps and ladders offer ..( people want them).. That is why Fords & Chevy have them... convenience..smaller people it helps
The only time when you are too short ...? Is when your legs cannot reach the ground..Um?

The Tacoma tailgate is large enough to have a step in built in.. The reasoning roof tops have steps..makes getting in and out easier...

I had no idea that tailgate theft was a legitimate problem. I saw it as a benefit of the lock and chuckled. I guess since I live outside the city and don't park on the street I don't really think to worry about people walking by my truck and taking it.

I can put the key in the lock cylinder and turn it. The nice part is that it don't cost a dime

Remote tailgate locks ...notice more people want them... Sales of aftermarket remote tailgate locks and factory one is growing!
    Convenient...easy to lock it...

I use the key on the Fob...to lock and unlock...it’s ok...one day I will get one remote install...

Do you remember the days you had to lock every door manually...? The button was on top of the door..
And people wish if there could be a easy way...? Now we got it ...and now some don’t?

and with the remote ..you can never lock your keys inside...(all my older auto’s had hidden keys
    Aloha

Locking it dosent help as much as it used to as now they will shatter your handle, manually pull the tailgate latches from inside the tailgate and walk off with it. Cant fawkin win against these people. Sucks. And if they arent stealing your tailgate, they are under it stealing your cats.

I keep a lot of gear in the bed and have a tri-fold tonneau cover. The tailgate remote lock is a must have for my use case. Also convenient if you don't want your tailgate stolen.

I have the OEM tailgate lock kit. I can't stand thieves so I wanted to make sure I could get my bed as secure as possible. I installed my kit and ran the cables along with Matt Gecko's bed light kit at the same time. I also installed the Sabellco tailgate lock. My truck is an SR so I have the key fob that works on the tailgate. I upgraded my key fob to the MESO flip fob and like the convenience of knowing when I use the remote my truck is secure. I carry a tool box in the bed and have the factory hard tonneau.

I have an SR5 so I have the H key not the touch door handles. I thought the power lock was something I really wanted but so far in 6 months its not become important. I have a hard tri-fold cover on the bed and I never lock the tailgate. So far it's been fine, no one has taken anything from my bed. I only keep a small box with bike tools and a 12v compressor, hiking boots, some tie down straps and a bowling bag in there most of the time. if they want that let them take it. If I put anything valuable I'd lock it with the key.

I have thought that it would be convenient, it would protect the tailgate from theft but I've not heard of that being a problem in my area.
Maybe if I start to travel more soon I should consider it.

The only time there would be any inconvenience really is if you lock your doors at home. At least that’s the only time I see it being inconvenient. I don’t have the lock of course and never lock my tailgate. However, if I’m at home my truck is never locked same as my house so that wouldn’t be an issue. About the only time I can see it as an issue for myself is if grocery shopping with the Tacoma and if I had a tonneau cover that was also locked.

My first vehicles didn’t have remotes so clicking a button will always be a step up from what I started with and then most cars had two keys. One for ignition and one for doors and trunks. Tail gates didn’t have locks period.

When I bought my 2021 TRD OR 6MT I ordered the tailgate lock. As the truck was being built, I was told the factory now left it to the dealer to put it on, but it was still part of the purchase so therefore covered by the 3/36 warranty. After I took delivery of the truck I had to wait 2-3 weeks to get it installed, so I lived without it for a while. I can tell you that if I opened my tailgate for anything, 95% of the time I forgot to lock it. It is locked 100% of the time now, securing both what I have under my tonneau as well as the tailgate itself. I know the latch can be shattered, but it is definitely a deterrent to impulse theft. Also, I intend to get the Sabellco lock as well, which will make it exceedingly difficult for anyone to steal my tailgate even if they get it open. My truck is garage kept and I live in a safe neighborhood. However I travel everywhere and I like the added security. @farmtacoma, if you are seriously considering the lock, I recommend getting it now to have it covered under the 3/36 warranty. I could not be happier with mine. Since I have a manual transmission, I do not have a smart key and any inconvenience of using my wireless key fob applies to the doors and tailgate alike and is easier than manually unlocking it.

Thank you. I am leaning towards getting it. I do travel to look at other farms, and lots of roadtrips, and since I don't stay at 4seasons, I do stay at some small town sketchy farm towns out of necessity

    You make a great point

I have the revolver x4 and it works great with it. At first, I would forget to use the door handles to unlock the tailgate but you get used to it pretty fast. If you want the tailgate to stay unlocked for longer than 30 or so seconds(?) you have to actually open a car door as my Tacoma will auto-relock if no door is opened (the tailgate does not count as a door). I'm sure there's a setting to fix this, but I like the auto-lock feature. If you do happen to accidentally set your keys in the bed (with a bed cover) and it auto-locks, you better hope you have connected services and your cell phone on you :) (ask me how I know lol). I work in an area where tailgates are frequently stolen and I keep tools in the back so its some extra security that doesn't require much effort.

Also, from what I've read, the dealer/OEM locking tailgate add-on is plug and play (Y-connector?) and most aftermarket ones seem to require splicing the wire harness. Food for thought.

I have had my 2015 F250 Platinum tailgate stolen and it cost $7500 to get it color matched and replaced.. The chrome piece was $1500 all by itself.. I like mine locked..

Where do some of you live that you worry about your tailgate being stolen? I love California, but have to admit that it's a thieving bastard state. I had a car stolen out of a garage in the 90's in SoCal. It's a great place to recreate, but that's about where it ends these days

Well tent cities are now popping up all over the low desert according to my sister. Apparently sleeping on the side of I-10 is the new in thing in CA. It's really crazy how bad stuff has gotten in that state. The same apartment I rented a decade ago has doubled in rent. It's no surprise people are living in tents

Houston area. They get stolen all the time here; I'm guessing since there are so many trucks here there is an increased demand for tailgates.

Try pressing the SOS button. Mine was glitched from the factory and they had to transfer me to 3 different supervisors. Apparently, the 2021 models don't follow the same "set-up" as the models before (since they are removing the built-in apps in favor of carplay) so you pretty much HAVE to use the SOS button to set it up.
