PC components were a hell of a lot more expensive in 2004. Since I'm looking at a rebuild in the next year or so I was catching up and prices have come down a LOT, especially in the processor and memory areas, since then.

That 1700 included EVERYTHING from the ground up - guts, case, cooling, monitor, peripherals, cabling, all of it, ordered and shipped.

Motherboard was the first SLI model shipped under the new SLI method Nvidia adopted back then. It was $200 on sale back then. The Mobo. Alone.

Multi-threaded software is still in the early stages of implementation anyway.

Even with software programmed from the ground up to be threaded, it's rare to see even both cores of a dual core proc maxed out all the time.

It's going to be a while before we really see these things unleashed.

Depending on the app, you're probably limited most by hard drive speeds anyway. Like you, I wouldn't worry about it.

An SSD would be great. Knocks the socks off a 7200rpm drive.

Well, there's a reason every company on the planet is working their ass off to try and get one produced at practical capacities and retail prices...solid state is definitely the future.

Yeah, 80GB isn't going to cut it for me, and I don't want to spend hundreds upon hundreds for a 256GB Samsung SSD.

Yeah, but they're probably just running plain ol' water.

You don't really get into the serious shit until you see the OC freaks using liquid N2 submersion to cool their chips. Then the really high speeds start to come out.
