I have 285's that came with the truck when I bought it. I like the height and the look, but it rubs my UCA if I turn hard. I am new to trucks, lifts, tacomas. So what do I need to do to clear the UCA? leveling kit? lift kit?

All that and/or wheel spacers to clear the UCA

Although, this will probably make the rubbing worse.

I have been told by many to not use spacers. I really don't want it much higher than it already is. I just need lift it or something by 3/4 of an inch. Would different rims or something else be cheaper (besides spacers)?

Yeah, you can get a higher offset/backspace to push the 285 tire away from the UCA

Also, a .5" top plate spacer up front could help providing 1" lift

Are you just driving around town or do you plan on taking the truck off pavement?

Lifting it 3/4" more won't really help with rubbing. It's more about finding the sweet spot for the tire in the wheel well. 4.5" backspacing wheels seem to work for most to clear the UCA. But then you may rub on the fenders or body mount. Fenders are no big deal, you can use a razor knife to trim away the extra plastic and it's not even noticeable unless you were specifically looking for it. The body mount is a bit more involved and may or may not be necessary. Search CMC (cab mount chop). Basically the body mount protrudes into the back side of the front wheel well and can rub on larger tires. It can be cut back by about 1" to make more room with no effect on it's function as a body mount. If you do cut it back, you'll need a cut off wheel and then most people end up welding in a plate to cover up the exposed body mount guts but that's just cosmetic.

Just slap some wheel spacers on.

I ran them for over a year with zero issues.

That was until I got the proper wheels

allows that fat tire to clear the frame, especially when flexing the suspension. It's not hard to do, or expensive. I'm really glad I had it done on mine.
