Wow that's some temps!!! When I lived there we didn't have themometers! Okay we did. But I didn't have A/C in any car until I bought a King Cab Datsun with aftermarket air and those sheepskin seat covers. :D At 185 - Maybe that saying should be "Once you go black - well, you die!" ;)

Yeah. I had 1 black car, and 1 charcoal Truck, and those were the last. My Wife wanted a black car desperatly, and I told her ""No way". Once I showed her the difference in temps, she understood.

The infamous Hockey Stick Chart. yeah, that one was a real winner from the guy that claimed he invented the internet. I'll say one thing, he's one helluva salesman. He can pimp his warming while selling ice to an Eskimo. It was a cool summer in KC. Now I'm freezing my ass off. The weather changes. We do not heat the planet from Suburbans but rather the sun. The sun has it's own climate, which happens to change too.

first of all, global warming is a term that is not used anymore. the hippies realized that the planet was not heating up, so now they call it "global climate change" which is bullshit, cause they can include anything into that. "oh there was a tsunami in indonesia? that was caused by global climate change".

secondly, there is no proof that ice is melting more than it has in the last few centuries. in fact, many arctic glaciers are getting bigger. but every once in a while a 2 mile ice shelf will break loose and fall into the ocean and some hippie gets it on tape and says the the glacier is melting.

"oh, big corporations are paying scientist to say that global warming doesn't exist"

ok, fine. who's paying the scientists that say it does exist? they may not be corporations but most of the time they are non profit groups. and just like corporations, their funding depends on results. if greenpeace is paying for scientists to study an arctic shelf, do you think they would continue funding that research if the scientists came back saying "there is no evidence that global warming is melting the ice". nope. if you dont give them the results they need then they wont continutue to fund the research. it goes both ways. any researcher who wants to keep his funding has no choice but to try to placate their funders.

in short, global warming is just a bunch of shit

Yup- those darned commies. Its all a giant Conspiracy!

Anyway, my thoughts about this issue are split. One one hand humans have only more recently discovered global weather patterns. So how can you predict a warming trend with not a whole lot of previous data to support the claim? There have actually been mini-ice ages just in the past 200 years. Ever read accounts of early settlers in the South ( NC and TN) Well most talk about the harsh, horrible winters and the heaping loads of snow. It seldom snowed when I was growing up. The 1700's-1800's saw what has more recently been described as a miniature ice age. So if that's the case, then we've been in a warming trend for the past 200 years or so.

On the other hand, the cities of NYC, SF, LA, Miami, and New Orleans all have plans currently in the works to restructure some of their coastal infrastructure because at the rate that ice is melting on the caps some areas will be underwater in the next 75-100 years. The Ice caps are something you can measure both in quantity of ice, age, and thickness. Ice that is thousands of years old has been melting rapidly.

So the big question is whether its man-caused. Who knows. Volcanoes spew an awful lot of CO2 into the atmosphere. Once volcanic erruption produces more pollution than Shanghai. Its also clear that Dinosaurs were likely eradicated by a huge meteorite impact which kicked up enough dust to cause major climate changes that led to their extinction. So yes- pollution of all kinds contributes to global environmental changes. I don't think you can say that man is totally innocent. It doesn't matter where pollution-either natural or man made- comes from. It eventually creates climate change.

So the argument is whether we are the ones responsible for change or is it a matter of natural global weather patterns. The 2nd argument is whether we could destroy the earth. I think we could easily destroy ourselves someday either with our own weapons or our own filth. But the earth will recover quickly after we're gone. So its not a question of will we destroy the earth but rather will we destroy ourselves.

Listen- I don't totally buy the entire global warming issue at face value. Humans try to think they know a thing or two about a 5 billion year old planet so basically its just an educated guess. But on the other hand I think its good to be aware of what we're doing. I'm kind of glad that there's some pressure out there to make things like cars and power plants cleaner so that if I have kids, they won't have to breathe the stuff. Otherwise our cars would still be running on leaded gas, you wouldn't be able to swim in a lot of lakes and rivers, and you'd get cancer from PCbs a lot easier. So my question to you is do you think it would be better for us to never change, never bother cleaning up anything, and even maybe go back to things like leaded gas? A lot of those came from this concern over global warming. Now whether global warming is real or not- who knows? But there's also been some good that has come out of it and those out there bitching and complaining about I'm sure would be more than unhappy if their kids were breathing lead fumes today.

Okay, back to being civil. Mr. bob wilson, I'm sorry.

You make some good points in your last post and I agree with the result of them.

My problem is halting the economy at the same time. Carbon credits? It is just a revenue generator. I do agree to continue our path to better technology but hockey sticks don't work in finance either. Look at the last time we tried this social experiment to politicize to the current levels. I remember the first earth day. I remember the VERY LONG GAS LINES. I remember having to switch cars to get gas - I felt sorry for those families that had 2 cars with odd numbered plates. I remember the downfall of the american car while we were all dealing with air pumps (worked for GM during those desperate days). We have changed much of what we have changed through good compromise and negotiations. To politicize this to this level is just a bit too much.

And what do we do if we do go through a tremendous cooling cycle. Do we get our carbon credits back?

    Peace bob.

You all must have forgotten that this is a problem that was solved when Obama took office.....or maybe the memo did not get out to everyone.

    There's a memo? Fheeew!

That's right. Now that I remember. president carter fixed the problems in the 70's/80's too.

Windfall profits tax fixed it then. Maybe we can limit salaries and profit the big companies to fix this thing and get on with enjoying life on the commune.
