I picked this classic up yesterday. Savage 99f in .308. Serial number dates it to about 1957, I believe the scope dates to about the same time. 20220102_124310.jpg

With the right equipment and skill a .223 can slap steel at 1000y. You just need a $2000 spotting scope to make good spots and a scope with 5 mils of wind on in the reticle to be consistent. (Most legit scopes have 5 mils in wind on reticle)

    True ill be more specific.

Hit and still have energy for 1rd incapacitating ( most military 308 is about 782m for 297 ft/lbs of energy)

I was being a little facetious, but yep, the .300 win mag is better for the task of taking life at beyond 1000y. When I left the military the technical manuals specified 1500y max effective. Obviously the technical manuals are stupid and don’t mean anything. However when some units dropped the MK 248 MOD 1 and switched to Berger 230gr OTM, it’s safe to say that even if the bullet is subsonic at 850 fps, 230 gr at 850fps is basically a 45 acp at around 1350m. MV was somewhere around 2850 depending on the barrel usually.

For hunting don't you want at least 1000 ft/lbs of energy to ensure an humane kill? So what is the bench mark for incapacitation? Once I get out to 1k I just want to hit what I am aiming at, I am not worried about how hard I am hitting, at those ranges ammo specs is as much of a consideration as the caliber and gun, more of a variable if terminal ballistics is important.

Huge fan of my bolt 300.

Though the 6.5 Creedmoor has replaced my 762, 300 Norma for 300 win mag, and 338 Norma for lapua and has been fantastic.

Essentially getting the equivalent of a 300 win mag ballistics from a 20 round box mag gas gun, and a slightly less better terminal than a 50 in the 338 Norma.

The trans sonic is hitting just slightly less than 1k for 6.5 and not problems touching 1200

I dont have the numbers in front of me for large game but I think it was somewhere of 700 ft lbs was ideal for elk and 600 preferred for deer.

This was a conversation from almost 4 years ago and was a ballistics class and discussion. I do however remember the magic 300 from FBI data stating the average ft lbs required for first round incapacitation being 300 ft/lbs.

Again, not in front of me I'd have to dig for it but has alot of great info and I believe I have files with up to date for the time (spring of 2018 i recieved, believe it was published in 16/17 and is still being added to) BC's and data from applied ballistics and they were spot on using doppler radar.

It doesn’t matter the ft/lb really. If you use a frangible round and hit a elk in the shoulder plate. Fail.

The formula for success is a combination of things. Bullet construction is one. Right bullet for right task. Expanding. You may consider bonded, but monos and even match grade can work…like the hornady ELD-x. We are looking for energy transfer. So bullet construction.

2nd is if you’re shooting that far…BC. BC is ideal to keep the bullet stream line. It allows the effects of atmospheric friction to be reduced and gives you are harder hit.

3rd. The copout. Shot placement. However, again, if you hit the wrong spot, it makes sense. 1500 ft/lbs might be the requirement, assuming the bullet stays intact, to punch through a shoulder, and while 600 lbs is sufficient for a clean double lung hit. However keep in mind most bullets, defensive, hunting or otherwise have a minimum velocity of which the bullet will perform as designed.

After that, yes. Remaining energy. Sure.

Absolutely agree. That being said, I'm not in the big game world anymore. I'll get back into it when I have more free time, and funds permit as I'd like to snatch up some of the stuff flying around here like a certain vortex or a very nice 3-15 nightforce on a gas 6.5 (got a 300 bolt) gun. Anyhow back on topic guys my bad!

Doing a little play around gotta pick up a punch to get the last done but it'll be a fun little toy all in less than 400 said and done
