this was back in the day when ammo wasn't such a commodity

Tell me more about Reno Cabelas?

 

Word is the State (Calif.) has watched for Calif. licenses plates shopping there (Reno Cabelas) and randomly stopped those cars at the state line entrance check for contra ban ammo purchased, illegally being brought into Calif.

I have no first hand info on this actually happening so could be internet rumors.

 

Oooh an illegal search and seizure .

 

Park your California vehicle, take an Uber.

 

I’d prolly go to jail for life just for owning a Lula.

 

Those are just rumors. Go to Cabalas Reno which is just a few miles from the state line any day especially weekends and half or more of the cars there are California plates. Chances of finding ammo are minuscule. Most are not there for ammo. Not worth the time and resources. But even more so they wouldn’t have either reasonable cause or reasonable suspicion to stop you. If they pulled you over for a vehicle violation they would not have reasonable cause or suspicion to search. They would have to bring a dog in to see if he alerted to drugs or explosives/gun powder. A total waste of time and resources.
And no they do not have people hanging out in the parking lot looking for people bringing ammo out of the store. All purchases are put in bags, no way to tell what they have purchased.
Nevada doesn’t give a damn about California laws. They do not check identification or anything else. The ammo isn’t locked up like in California. You just take the ammo you want off the shelf and put the ammo in your basket and go to the checkout stand and off you go. I of course wouldn’t do such a dastardly criminal act like taking ammo into California I’ve just heard from criminal types who have done this how it’s done

 

Another thing is even if California had a granted jurisdiction in a Nevada cabelas parking lot, there’s no real probable cause for a search. Buying ammo is not indicative in itself of crossing stateline. People hunt, compete and hangout on the range with friends and family.

which goes back to stateline. They would have to basicly stop everyone. There would really be no way of knowing who got what where and for what reason..

 

That would stress me out not being able to walk in walk out with ammo and jumping through hoops

 

So... this did happen a couple times (literally twice from my understanding). CHP/Ca Doj operation looking for magazines and FTF gun purchases latest one was 2018. I have never heard of anyone doing this for ammo.

The payoff for this was so low that its not considered worth the manpower.

 

Yep, can just walk in a Walmart or shop and walk out with what I get. No fuss no muss

Yea, Cabelas for a time had those 12K round barrels of LC M193 or M855. You could buy one with cash and walk out. They would likely even help tailgate load it into your CA truck ZFG. lol

Its like people buying fireworks at Pyramid Lake reservation.

I was working in central IL, and during one of the panics created by an unnamed anti gun president, I found a Walmart that had 1k rounds of 556. My intention was to leave some for others, and the price still wasn't great, I told them I wanted 500 of them.
The gal behind the counter was nice, but hung up because I didn't have a FOID card from IL. I told her as a MO resident, I didn't need one. So now customers are within in earshot wanting the rest of the ammo and questioning as to why I think I can buy without a FOID and they can't without FOID.


FFW- manager comes over, quickly grabs a laminated chart, points at it, and says "yep, he's got a Missouri ID, ring up the ammo"
The look on the checker gal's and the other customer's face when I threw my half case in my buggy and strolled off. I heard one of the customers say "so basically; he has more rights in our state then we do? Sounds like Illinois"
