I almost wish I hadn’t given mine the combo but she keeps stuff in it also. A couple of weeks ago she opened the door and a rifle fell out and broke her toe she wasn’t happy

Well I bought a rifle today and now I wait for it to be shipped. It has been years since I bought a new rifle and got it setup. I’m not worried about zeroing the scope.

I would however appreciate scope ring/mount suggestions. It’ll be going on a Tikka UPR with a 20moa pic rail. The last time I setup a new rifle I don’t even recall the choice between vertical or horizontal split rings. I’ve always used horizontal split rings. I’ll look into the differences between those too.

The rifle is chambered in .308 with just under a 24” barrel, and the scope has been narrowed down to a couple choices. I don’t plan on shooting out past 500 yards but ya never know.

    Thoughts welcome. Pew pew

Lol from most guys its half not wanting to let them know when a new toy comes home and half they start taking over space like a closet.

But really unless you have a very high end gun safe I usually tell people to get a separate dedicated fireproof safe for documents or put the documents inside one of those and then in the safe. Gun safes are not that great at fire protection for documents. I have unfortunately seen the aftermath of multiple house fires where the gunsafe did almost nothing.

Target shooting, not worried about size or weight the 14x will be nice.

For bases and rings I use alot of seekins/vortex or EGW stuff. Works well and doesnt break the bank.

For stuff im worried about banging around, badger usually gets my money.

I would imagine that, while a gun safe would stop the actual fire from damaging items inside.. the temperature could still get pretty high. A lot of plastics might still melt from temperature alone? I'm no expert though.

Fire safes should also be placed near exterior walls in areas with minimal fire load (no 2nd story above, liquid fuels storage area,..). Have seen plenty of wrecked "fire rated" safes too that might as well have just been a wall locker cabinet. And these were in homes that didn't even burn down completely.

Most gun safes work by using sheet rock like material that releases moisture to control the internal temp. After the moisture dries up the temp starts climbing. Nicer safers will have a heat sensitive expanding seal to try and keep some of that in but the reality is they are designed with metal and wood in mind not paper. The fire rating on most gun safes is not for a full house fire where it burns down to the foundation. They assume a fire department will knock it out quickly.

Which also brings up the point, open the safe and clean the guns ASAP after a fire. You basically just put all the guns through a sauna during the fire and rust will quickly begin to set in.
