Here in Cali it’s $1 for a background check for ammo. That is not an extensive check. If you buy a caliber for which they have no record of you owning such a gun then a more thorough check is done costs $20. Every single time you buy ammo another background check is done. So if I buy ammo today and again tomorrow a check is done both days. Also they keep a record of what you buy and how much you buy. I feel so much safer with the background checks, really stops all the bad boys from getting ammo for their stolen guns.

 

if you have to pay for a background check for ammo you might as well just buy in bulk.

I wonder what they think about me buying 1000 to 2000 rounds at a time given the fact that I train 4 to 5 times a month.

 

The more expensive check is if you havent bought a gun in the last 8ish years or moved since then. If they are charging you more than $1 and you own a registered gun they are overcharging you.

 

You are correct. I was told differently but you are right. Luckily I purchase guns once a year or more.

 

I go to guns, fishing, and other stuff either in Vacaville or Dublin and buy another G3 G19.

Ive heard of shops saying that to people and making them do the more expensive check when its not necessary. There was one shop that just wont do the $1 check.

You don’t need a background check but there is an 11% additional excise tax added to everything - guns, ammo, gun parts, reloading supply’s. Sales tax varies by county in California but averages 10% to 11%. So you pay a total of around 22% tax on everything guns, ammo etc. Reloading in this state isn’t as cheap as it use to be and I really don’t have the time to reload.
The cheapest I can find 9mm ball ammo around where I live is $130 for 500, about the 26 cents per round. Then add 22% to the cost which takes it up to about 31 cents a round.
