That's a good find.

 

It means there are far better candidates in a short action rifle caliber, pushing similar MC and KE for similar or often lighter recoil.

If someone was picking up a new short action rifle, and had no other rifles in .308, I would recommend choosing a different caliber. The .308 is a perfectly good all around round; it's not great and it's far from the best.

From my experience, the typical new/only gun shooter wants a rifle to do it all. Hunting, target practice, home defense, boat oar, long range shooting, concealed carry, and making waffles. The .30 caliber projectiles are at disadvantage in terms of their BC. While the 100yrd deer hunter will never really care, when you push out past the 500yrd mark or so, you notice.

There's no perfect round for everything, but considering 308 has hundreds of factory options that are relatively cheap and readily available you can't really go wrong with it as a do-all caliber. Same goes for 30-06.

I won't buy a rifle if my only ammo options are hand rolling or ordering it online. Been there done that.

 

For off the shelf calibers, I'd rather have a .260rem in SA or a .270win for the LA, over the .308 and .30-06 respectively. While not as prolific, both are still very much available at just about any gun store.

But I get you on the roll your own idea. I have a 6.5x55 Improved in a custom action. I can't even get ammo on the web.

 

I just ordered an AR pistol upper and lower from Palmetto State armory. I'm also waiting for my M&P slide to get back from primary machine so I should have a few pictures to post in the next couple weeks.

 

Where can I get a slide for a G19/4 that will accomodate Red Dot MOS-type sight?

Yes, I have a G19. I guess that is one possibility but I'd like to have the original slide to put back on if I ever sell it.

Despite all the warnings, I picked up a used nightmare yesterday, and I am going to try to turn it into a functioning firearm. That nightmare is called a Remington 597 Magnum...a .22 Magnum semi-auto with a horrible reputation (aka the jam-o-matic). Wish me luck.

I just picked up a Larry Vickers G17, tan frame with black slide. Never been fired, guys had it sitting for the last couple years.

I want to have the slide cut for a red dot, chop the frame to g19 length and undercut the trigger guard.

I have no experience with these slides but have been tempted to pick one up for a extra G19 frame I have. My RMR uppers are Suarez International and are really well machined and a little more accurate than stock.

Dang, I didn’t notice that you specified Gen 4. I don’t see any Gen 4 slides on brownells. Keep an eye on Suarez, they will have good sales occasionally. I’ve seen stripped slides go for about $250.

 

I did. They have lots of Gen 3 slides but mine is a Gen 4. Their RMR Gen 4 slides are almost the same cost as a new gun.
