Can anyone recommend a good looking and performing AR muzzle brake/compensator? My pussyish state won't allow a flash suppressor or hider.

It's the last piece of my build that I can't decide on, not to mention I've yet to receive a notice from Rainier Arms that the original compensator I wanted has been restocked (2 months now).

Function over form. Ideally I like one that doesn't blow your eardrums out even though you're still wearing hearing protection. Anyone have any experience with one they like?

Noveske KX3. It is louder than a birdcage, but not for the shooter. They kind of funnel the sound away from you, and it creates pretty nice flame balls. They also make a 14.5" bbl legal length when pinned and welded, and look nice tucked under a rail.

If that's not your bag and you want something a little more traditional, I would advise a battlecomp. http://battlecomp.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=5

That's the cheapest way to go plinkin' for sure. I've been thinking of getting and Adams Arms upper in 5.45 just for that purpose.

That's exactly what I got haha. Huldra Arms rebrands and sells the Adams Arms 5.45x39 upper for less. They just got back in stock:

AR Stoner Mags from Midway. ASC and C Products also make AR mags for 5.45x39. Other people trim down the front of the follower on PMAGs and use those. Theres a thread on Calguns on how to mod 556 PMAGs for 5.45

You'll have to shoot half of that to pay for the upper in ammo price difference between that and decent 5.56mm. Hell, one can find cheaper .223 for target shooting and it would take you all 6,000rds to pay for the upper and 5.45 surplus is quickly going to dry up. If you don't yet have a 5.45 upper I wouldn't advise getting one now for the purposes of cheaper ammo. The 5.45 ammo deals are going to be dwindling to nothing and once the surplus dries up the cost to produce 5.45 won't be that much different from 5.56mm. then you have to buy accessories for it (expensive if you shoot Aimpoint or EOTech or decent magnified optics), mags and deal w/different caliber ammos and swapping uppers and such. I mean it's your money so y'all can do whatever you want I just want to make sure some who are considering going this route are aware of all the details. You may still save a few bucks overall on cost of ammo but it's not a guarantee the way it was 10 years ago. Just playing devil's advocate as I see lots of people asking about going this route for purpose of saving money.

If you read carefully I never said that. I was basing my comparison on 5.56mm that costs about $0.40rd (brass cased, boxer primered, reloadable, etc.) but I was saying that one could find cheaper .223 target ammo than that for comparison which makes the savings on 5.45 even less. My comparison on needing to shoot all 6k rounds wasn't really apples to apples since the 5.56mm ammo I was comparing it to was substantially better quality. If all one wants is to hurtle projectiles downrange like most 5.45 surplus you can find cheaper to compare apples to apples.
