If an AR is "fully assembled" you can dry fire to your heart content. The function check even requires you dry fire the gun.

"IF" you have the upper and lower separated, then you should "NOT" pull the trigger, or allow the hammer to fall under spring pressure.

I guess I'm thinking of a lower only.
fully assembled, of course no harm.
hammer hits the pin, the pin strikes - nothing.

Your right about the upper and lower being separated and dry firing. There are very few reasons to do that, though.

If you're practicing with dry fire, it needs to be assembled. That way there's no damage like the above posters stated.

 

I will kick my own ass. I assumed upper separated; for some reason. Maybe when i install new triggers. function check. and I don't dry fire.
I just use ammo in the mag.
dammit.

Duly noted. For some reason, I thought of a new trigger and a lower only. busted. Good to know there are shooters here. I'd be one.yeah the gas tube is not on yet, fitting the gas block, ya bastards. Rock river 1:8 bbl.

 

I got some for around $15 off the magpul website. Last weekend I picked up a couple more for $17.99 at Cabelas. I'll be grabbing some more but not in the hundreds
