Yep, it's hard to be picky nowadays with ammo, you gotta get it while you can. Or roll your own.

I feed all my guns (AR, AK, Glock, HK, and friends - I don’t discriminate) a diet consisting of mostly steel cased ammo and have the exact same reasoning. If I shoot out my AR barrel or extractor I’ll replace it with all the money I saved. I think it a funny how many people will only run brass through their AR that they use to shoot cans. I see no point in expensive ammo for plinking. Hunting and self defense are a totally different story.

also clean my guns after every range trip so I don’t mind the dirtyness.

funny because I’ve had the opposite experience. Usually I buy mostly cheap steel cased ammo but nowadays I buy whatever I can find which means lots of brass 5.56. I’ve only been finding 7.62 in steel cases these days. Haven’t seen .223 in months.

Ive also got my eye on a FLIR Breach. Looks like the right level for me. May even be able to get work to pay for it as a energy saving finder tool, then borrow it for a weekend or two.

Steel is getting close to a dollar a round. I listed up 500 rounds of Tula steel for $450 and it was sold within an hour!

yeah that’s nuts. Every time I look online and see $1 a round for bulk .223 and 7.62 i laugh and say no thanks.

I have a local gun shop that still has pretty normal pre-covid prices and always has ammo in stock. You have to stand in line for 45 min to get in but you leave with everything you went in for and it’s $15 boxes of 9mm, $25 .45, and $25 for 50 rounds of brass .556. Just gotta deal with box limits but at least they’re limits per caliber instead of 2 box max like a lot of store here.

the price gouging online has gotten insane.

I’m new to 9mm pistols. Can you explain why you wouldn’t advise the steel?

Places like your place are rare, at least in my area they are. My LGS has some ammo, but .223 and 5.56 is still $1/round and people are buying it up like it's going out of style. A lot of them aren't really gun people, so they don't know any better, so they pay the current market price. If folks would stop buying while it's high, then the price will come down.

yup lots of new gun owners that don’t know any better. There was a guy behind me in line yesterday bragging about how 4 months ago he didn’t own a gun and now he has 7, couldn’t help but think to myself “Damnitt you’re half the problem”.

I Feel very fortunate for my LGS. They claim to be the largest distributor west of the Mississippi (which I question) but I don’t complain. Last time I was in they said they had 15k guns in stock a year ago and now they’re down to 7k while still restocking.

I grew up in NC and talking to my buddies back east it sounds like the gouging is worse out there. My buddy in SC says 9mm is going for $50-75 for a box of 50... if you can find it.

I’m regularly getting 9mm in my store in SC and sell it for around 22 a box because that’s as low as I can price it...but I maybe get a case a month if we’re lucky

if stores are charging 50 a box, they’re profiteering

That sounds about right, I've seen $45-$65 for 9mm, $12-$15 for OO buck (5 shells) and $1/round of 5.56. Clown world I tell ya.
