What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

Rain in Houston Texas this morning made me to get in garage and replace spark plugs (this was 3rd time at 116k miles now) and serpentine belt (first time 116k miles).
Went with OEM (Denso) plugs from dealer, and Bando belt ordered from rockauto.

That looks like the Toyota Bed Mat for the Tacoma. Check your local Craigslist, Facebook Market Place, or OfferUp as you can usually pick up a decent used one for about $50

 

Got any more info on the spacer, what does it improve?

 

You already had the cam gears installed correct? So far do you think the spacer is worth it on top of the gears?

Im just curious how is your emergency brakes holding on inclines since you have done the conversion to discs on the rear? I did the rear disc conversion years ago and have had issues of the emergency brake holding on inclines. Just curious if you will have the same problem. the Vendor I got the kit from sent a stronger spring for the brake after the initial complaint and that temporarily fixed the bottom just for it to return. Hope you don't have the problem.

 

Is this directly from Tilton? is it a 2nd gen tacoma specific kit that they carry or did you have to piece it together?
I went with the clutch masters kit and I'm currently regreting that as I am on my second kit from them. Be nice to have another option available(hopefully one with better reviews/durability and other than going back to stock) for when the second Clutchmasters kit fails.

 

It doesn't hold very well on inclines. They noted on the instruction manual that the factory drums are superior in holding power than this kit as far as parking goes due to the larger surface area and shoes. Since these are FJ parts I searched the FJ Cruiser forum and the consensus was the parking brake doesn't hold as well as the tacoma drums but it stops way better which was my main concern. I opted for the Sequoia MC upgrade which I recommend. Much better pedal feel. What I did to help them hold better was adjust the ebrake cable in the center console. There was quite a bit of slack in the line.

 

This thread has all the info. Long story short there isn't a "kit" from Tilton for this swap but the awesome members ( @BillDaCat8 & @Kasbien )of TW have come up with a solution.

Lowers torque curve, adds midrange. Lots of info on the thread for it if you look it up.

 

Can't tell so far, ecu is still learning. I've only driven it about 40 miles since the install. I've noticed it a bit, but nothing huge.

 

But yes, I have the cam gears also. I'll do the OTT tune to tie it all together since I don't want to go through the PITA process of installing headers

 

the stiffness jokes just write themselves so i will refrain.

I have Wilwood mk4 mechanical parking brakes on the rear discs and have similarly weak parking brakes. I’ve had to adjust the passenger side mk4 but to get it to hold adequately at the disc I have to set it so there is considerably more drag than driver side, and too much for my liking. I think I’m going to check out the adjuster under center console and see if I can fine tune since it can pivot and equilibrates between the driver vs pass provided the tension is adjusted right.

 

Funny you mentioned headers. At least 2nd gens can take headers. Not an option on 3rd gen as I found out in my 1st month of ownership. Another BOOOO for 3rd gens. Don't have headers on my 2nd gen but it has better power than the wimpy 3rd gen did.

 

Headers and a Y pipe are the only "performance" mods I have left to do with out buying a supercharger. I'd love to do it, but I've heard enough about the header install to avoid it. So, the spacer and a tune will be all I can do until I get bored with a little more spending money in my pocket.
