    I can't find it written anywhere, but when I was in school to get my license our instructor told us it is considered a "protruding body part" such as if a bumper was curled from say an off road incident or the like, and should therefore be failed.

    To me, it's an unnecessary leverage point in the event of an accident that could result in a bent frame, and possibly then a denied insurance claim. I keep my recovery hitch in the toolbox and get it out when I need it.

    I get the association to the bumper thing. But sounds like its just misinformation passed down, more than an actual rule. Also I have honestly never heard of anyone not passing, being cited, denied a claim, etc...

    Yup. I have the OEM roof rack on there. The shell is level with the cab.
