I drive with them on around Texas all the time, cops tail me but they can't bust me if I follow the rules. Plus the lights are only illiegal if you can see the LEDs (not the glow).

EDIT: oh and I am pretty sure red is the only color you can't do on the outside.

    Bingo.

VISIBLE... doesn't matter if you can see the lamps or not.

I got off with a warning on two violations on my Silverado.
1 - My offroad lights on the roof rack were not covered.
2 - The roof rack was on the shell, and the high-mount brake light on the back of the cap reflected in the two center lights.

Cop was cool because I was cool... he was in front of me and I saw him double-take his mirror as I was pulling up stopping behind him.
When the light turned green, he stuck his hand out the window and motioned to the side of the road. I pulled over, he let me pass and pulled in behind.

    But federal law FMVSS218...

Only steady white or amber, or flashing amber turn signals may be displayed forward.
Only steady amber or flashing amber may be displayed to the sides, visible from the front quarter of the vehicle (yes, clear corners are illegal).
Only steady red, or flashing amber or flashing red turn signals may be displayed rearward, or visible from the rear quarter of the vehicle.

Steady amber shall not be visible from the rear of the vehicle, steady or flashing red shall not be visible from the front of the vehicle.

Your lights are perfectly legal to run while sitting in a parking lot hanging out with your buds, but they must be shut off when on the road.

Just because you've so far only encountered cops that were cool doesn't mean that you won't run into one who's having a bad day and will throw the book at you for everything he can find.

Blue underglow won't make it 5 miles in my city before the driver gets popped and gets to play 20 questions, beginning with "Are you on parole?"

    *cough*BS*cough*

The only colors allowed visible externally from the rear are to be red & amber for directional indicators. Front is white and amber for running lights as well as directional indicators. Anything else you're risking a ticket. You run red and blue mood lights inside your vehicle while in motion and you're risking a ticket. Stating that it's legal is inaccurate. Just because you haven't yet been ticketed for anything doesn't mean you won't so be careful of the information you spread on the intrawebs.

lol Probably but I have literally asked a couple of police officers from three different stations, one near where I live, one In fort Worth and one in Mckinney. All of them basically said as long as the LEDs are not visible it is perfectly fine. So my misinformation is due to the fact I was being told the wrong info.

    That's not uncommon.

If you want the wrong answer about California gun laws, the two best places to get the wrong answer are #1 - cops and #2 - Gun shop.

Yeah I am not surprised, That is why anytime I go to a new area I ask a station *cough* not bs *cough* and check if it is going to be a problem. If they say its not a problem then I know I am pretty safe.

Either your statement was BS or the people people telling you were BS. Either way you're presenting information a factual and confirmed when it is indeed not legal in any way. Other people reading your statement may get into trouble by taking your word and that of 'three stations' as fact.

The problem is that there are SO many damn laws that there is no possible way to teach a new patrolman EVERY law they must enforce during Academy & FTO along with everything else they must know. The fact that an average patrolman doesn't know the exact laws on something relatively inconsequential doesn't surprise me. That doesn't mean that one who knows the laws better won't write you a ticket or worse. Red and blue lights coming from inside your car while in motion are a great way to get into some SERIOUS trouble. Most LEO's take impersonation of a police officer laws seriously.

Well ok, I will admit I was wrong saying they were "legal". I will rephrase to say they are acceptable around my area but you still draw the risk of a ticket regardless of how acceptable certain police officers are. I will say NEVER combine blue or red, NEVER strobe any lights on the outside, make sure only the glow is showing, and obey traffic laws and you could possible be as lucky as me and drive around without getting ticketed.

You keep saying this like it's acceptable. It's not. You aren't supposed to have ANY lights on in your interior while in motion that than your dash. If you turn on your map lights as you're driving down the road you can be ticketed for this. Same thing applies to your glowing mood light regardless of color or if you 'can see the LEDs' or not. Stop saying this like it's fact and anyone else who does this will be within confines of the law so long as they must make sure their LEDs are showing and only the glow shows. This BS is going to get someone else in trouble.

Get a Flip Video HD way cheaper and just as good. Just not as many mounting options in my opinion.
