How did you attach the mount to the hex rack? I’ve been using Velcro straps to mount mine and this seems like a better option.

I am offended that you own a Tacoma and a Jeep Wrangler. We will call it a draw. So I guess you have a Jeep to get you there and a Tacoma to get you back home. Sorry. I couldn't help myself.

Thanks. That’s another idea. When I get a chance I’ll dive into it more. Reall doesn’t bother me much to plug in but it’s just ugly having it there. I have considered reworing the center console to be the CarPlay connector.

Yeah I knew it’s a little smaller for sure. I guess the option is to leave it or cut it. I was a car audio installer for years so hoping I can figure something out.

Might be interested. Didn’t 100% follow the WiFi thing though and what you don’t like.

Sorry I probably could have phrased it better.

I have a wifi hotspot that I use in the car when I’m on long trips and such so that I don’t have to use all my data. The wireless CarPlay adapter that I have works by creating its own wifi signal, which you connect to with your phone.

Because I have to connect to the CarPlay adapter’s wifi, I can’t use my wifi hotspot at the same time. So if I want to use the wireless car play adapter, I have to use up the data on my phone plan.

I got tired of screwing around with the drain that comes with the filter. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. Bought one of these and it works great.

I have an aftermarket hu with carplay and android. Really appreciate the unlimited Verizon plan for this. I actually use Pandora and youtube more than the android app. I do use waze on rare trips. Honestly usb music is my fave.

I detest cutting anything anymore, I always seem to mess it up a little somehow. Even if it's not enough to notice, I know it's there. So I also thought about just leaving the existing USB port there as a "dummy" and installing a new one behind the dash until I looked up the replacement part... just under $100 IIRC so no, that's not going to happen. I'd rather put any more time and money toward a new head unit now. There are some PNP Alpines that not only have more power, wireless Car Play and other options, but also replicate all of the vehicle data, steering wheel controls, etc. that the OE Toyota head units have. Just a matter of how much you're willing to do and/or put up with... and money I guess. :spending:

What replacement part is $100? I just used a $10 cable from AliExpress which connects to the back of the oem headunit (where you disconnect the factory plug) and gives you a usb-a plug that you can then plug an extender to.

I didn't know that. The Toyota replacement port, the part that goes in the dash is around $100.

I looked at some photos of the back of the OE head unit and didn't see a basic USB port. So is it just a standard USB IO port back there or is it some kind of proprietary connection on one end? If it's just a matter of unplugging the existing USB dash port and plugging in a USB extension cable or an adapter of some sort and then an extension cable, I'm in! Thought it might be more complicated. Do you happen to have a link to the part you used?

    TIA!

It's a proprietary connection. Cable and more info listed in the thread below. I have a non JBL headunit, not sure if the cable is the same for the upgraded radios.

Sweet! Also have a non-JBL stereo. Wish I’d found your thread earlier.
    Thanks for that.

EDIT: Ordered the USB adapter from Ali-Express. They say it’ll be here in about three weeks.

I’d like to hear how the extraction goes. I may or may not have done this on another of my cars.:anonymous:
