To be fair, saving money was not on the list of reasons I converted to manual hubs..

    LMFAO... 100% agree.

Saving money has nothing to do with the thought process of ANYTHING I do to this truck. If I wanted to save money I would give the truck away.

So I know the connector, and I do have a manual trans, but have the j-shift. What does unplugging that allow?

You can't do that mod then. You'd need the push button one.

Only way to do 2lo for you is a twin stick because you have a Jshift.

They're 7100 12" short bodies. Been on there for a while now. Kings needed new shafts, so they got rebuilt and sold.

Work great for my current uses, but if I could get a 2.5" with the same lengths I might upgrade.

Pretty sure there's a needle bearing in the spindle portion not the locking hub part. Kind of confusing when talking manual hubs. I typically refer to the part that bolts to the wheel with the studs in it as the hub.

    What's in volume 2a?

My set (also 1998, but used from a dealer) only included Vols 1+2 and the electrical wiring diagram.

Unrelated to the books, nice table. My grandparents had one like that.

Ya, you're right... it is confusing because you're, essentially, talking about 2 "hubs" in the same place.

    The locking hub

    Screenshot_20240603_201553_Chrome.jpg

    And the wheel hub

    Screenshot_20240603_201618_Chrome.jpg

And you are correct, there is a needle bearing in the wheel hub.

Says supplemental, but it really isn't. Covers Suspension, Axle, Brakes, Steering, SRS, Body Electrical, Body, and AC. Very, very thorough and blows a Haynes manual away.

Also, that's our kitchen table. Wife went very retro with a formica table and some really old school chairs.

Thinking about it a bit, I bet they just split volume 2 into two books to make things more manageable. Mine's like 3+ inches thick.

Makes sense, I bet you are right.
Also, one of the better purchases to make for a Tacoma owner.

    Love this!

Could you share your process for the conversion?

Was it just a simple Plug-N-Play or were some mods involved?

    Pics if you have them.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Morning Mike,

Its as simple as it gets, new knobs are the same diameter and height as the old ones. Its a two step process:

Remove the old knobs by pulling them straight out, be sure to remove the metal bushing/sleeve if it doesn't come with
    IMG_9479.jpg

line up new knobs and push into place, no sleeve needed with these

thats it, 5-10 min all in

After a couple days of using them I couldnt be happier, probably the most bang for the buck of my mods.

    Oil change and Fumoto valve

pretty sure that over the lifetime of the vehicle the amount of time I save changing oil will still be vastly outweighed by all the time I spent reading about the pros, cons, and truck/oil pan destroying potential of this mod:rolleyes:

oil pan bling for the win

Well, after 400K+ miles, I guess this was bound to happen.

Went to leave to pick up my son and SNAP! door no open.
    upload_2024-6-4_19-4-49.jpg

After a couple of days waiting for new parts - and opening the door by going in the PS and opening the DS door, I installed a pair of black, metal door handles. Unclipping the door release rod was a pain and I ended up breaking the plastic clips because they were so hardened. Glad the new ones came with clips (I checked first).
