Sounds like creepy noise you hear in a movie when a door opens and something comes flying out.

Try all bushings and ball joints in the front first. Lube them, wiggle them see if theres any play... ect. I would have someone turn the wheel while you listen and feel and try to track down where its coming from..
But it could be the stearing rack also.. GL

I feel like something is bent. Does the steering feel heavy? uneven tire wear? or bad alignment lately

That sound is definately dry rubber friction noise. I would look at all of your steering rubber bushings and such.

Same rubber but it knocks when it jumps sort of speak. The best way I can describe it, is like if you have damp hands, and slide them on a clean window. Your hand want to bind to the glass, but eventually the kinetick energy "unbinds" it with a snap and your hand kind of jumps a little.
    Did I explained myself?

I had exactly the same noise on a compact car on winter. The struts rubber bushings would make that same awful noise when turning the steering wheel.
