what is a pcv valve?

    Positive Crankcase Ventilation. It keeps the crankcase pressure in check.

    to add, it is usually hooked up to the intake manifold - vacuum from the manifold pulls oily gases out of the crankcase. it's a one way valve.

    and the reason that it is a one way valve is to prevent a backfire from getting into the valve cover
