I have a nice herd of bugs on my grill that washing and pressure washer won't get off. I had some old Turtle Wax bug and tar remover but it didn't do much. It was also almost like a liquid wax. I remember some bug and tar remover that was thin like mineral spirits. Can someone recommend a good bug and tar remover?

for the tar, wd-40 or even better, a little bit of straight gasoline on a rag will wipe it right off. For the bugs, high pressure sprayer.

Car wash pressure and my pressure washer didn't take it all off. My grill and bumpers are painted and don't want mess up the paint. How does WD 40 work on painted surfaces?

It dont sound like you believe me but gasoline will not hurt your paint. I get it on my motorcycle tank all the time and now and then I get some on the truck paint when filling it up at the gas station and never hurt it all, ever. You could try it on a non visible area and find out for yourself.

I use Duragloss Bug Remover & a Bug Sponge. Duragloss will not remove any wax/sealant either. I'm sure Autogeek will have a nice Labor Dale sale next week also.

For the bugs, a wet dryer sheet. Works like magic.

I have a bug and tar sponge I got on Amazon. When dipped in hot water it gets pretty soft so it's clear coat safe.

Use caution when removing bugs, let them sit in water for a bit before going after them (you can get some hot water and car soap in a spray bottle and hit them a few times to pre-soak them). Then carefully remove them with a sponge or microfiber towel.

Don't use any harsh chemicals. It's not great for your paint long term. Your clear coat could haze from damage over time. The best thing to do with this is prevention not treatment. Use a high quality sealer on your paint. It prevents the bugs from sticking so bad. And again don't use harsh chemicals because you'll strip the sealer off.

I have the dealer applied Zylon paint protection which helps but the bugs still stick.

@MTgirl tells me she sprays bugs with Windex. Soak a few minutes and rinse off.

Have not tried it myself yet.

Her Runner gets a LOT of bugs though since she's in the mountains every weekend.

The hood and grill was redone four years ago. Supposed to be good for 5 years. Water still beads up on the hood like it did when the Zylon was first applied. My truck stays in my garage more than it is out so maybe that helps the Zylon work longer. My dealer always has a Zylon demo vehicle in the showroom. The actually apply some spray paint to the hood, let it dry then run a finger through the paint and it comes right off.

If you have a coating, I would especially stay away from any harsh chemicals or removers. Stick with car soap and water and just take your time. You will strip a coating eventually with any harsh products.

You can still use a sealer on top of a coating to prevent any sticking. You can also use a wax if you garage the truck and don't drive a lot of miles. I'd clay and apply a wax to the front end every 4-6 weeks. Bugs should come right off.
