Well, The 1GR-FE in the Tacoma has an 10:1 compression ratio, Output is 236 hp at 5200 rpm with 266 lb·ft of torque at 4000 rpm on 87 octane, and 239 hp at 5200 rpm with 278 lb·ft at 3700 rpm on 91 octane.
Thats 12 more lb.-ft. of torque, at a lower rpm. And yes, it is very noticable.

I usually run 87 or 89 in town. When I travel on the interstate I use 91.

where did you get these numbers? Just curious I havent seen anything besides the factory numbers, I would like to see some dyno charts.
Those numbers do make sense with the VVT engine, it is more prone to early detonation on the big cams, but at least with my truck the engine rarely sees anything above 3 grand. If your not at High RPM at WOT all the time it will be much of a change.

I recently switched to 91 and I don't really notice a big difference but I do seem to get a little more mileage out of this.

Besides if you read the manual it says 93 was used for the research so all those specifications were done with 93 not 87. It does tell you that you shouldn't use anything under 87.

I use the cheapest gas at the pump except when it's time to plow snow. When I plow, I put 91 in my trucks because the engines really have to work.

Those numbers ARE factory numbers. The 236 h.p. rateing is on 87 oct. fuel. The FJ is listed as 239 h.p., with 91 oct. The engine and tuning are the same between the FJ and Tacoma. In my owners manual, it even states best performance is achieved with premium fuel. :)

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
    Premium (93) here.

    I can tell the difference.

I hate it when people tell me it's all in my head. They can friggin walk instead of getting a ride in my truck.

Well you also do get a bit better gas mileage, so it evens out.

I usually run 87. I think with gas the way it is, I'll start testing 89 to see any differences.

i put only 89, and only Shell or BP, No cheap gas in my trunk. The dfference in gas mileage is huge. All gas is the same, but its the additives that make the differance. And wait until the election is over, gas will go right back up. I wasn't suprised to see gas go down, happens every election. Its a game they play.

I've been saying for months on this forum that it will go down. I just don't buy into media hype like so many other folks out there. This increase followed the same exact pattern as the early 70's. Gas increased for 8 years and then sharply dropped.

I don't believe gas will shoot up again anytime soon. When the economy improves (some experts think we've already hit bottom), gas will increase some but it won't go to $4/gal again for a long time. But, like you said, it really depends on who is in the White House. One candidate wants "windfall profits taxes" on oil companies. Now, considering businesses do not pay taxes, who do you think will be paying that tax?

I've only run 87 in mine, it's still fairly new, under 10,000 miles. I've been wondering, if I switch to 89 and then gas goes up, will I have any problems switching back to 87?

^None at all. The computer automatically retards or advances the timing so you're good.

So switching octanes like that is'nt bad for it? I know cars need/reccommend 93 and the same for 87. I was used to using 93 in my WRX all the time and the price change from 93 to 87 when I got my tacoma was awesome but is there really a performance gain if you use 93.. ie: better hauling, gas mileage, anything?

Supposedly, 91+ is "recommended" for the Tacoma because the timing is retarded when using lower so you aren't getting the full hp/tq numbers (see chris4X4's post #30). But you can use any octane 87 or higher.
