I have found its more cost affective to run the higher octain fuel. I get better mpg, and the diff. in price is only $0.20 a gallon.

I've been using 87 with no problems. For the last tank and the next few tanks, I'm trying 91 to see if I get any difference in gas mileage. Experiment while it's cheaper.

I use aviation fuel in my chainsaws. They run better, faster and no worries of the fuel spoiling between seasons.

One drawback is the dang thangs are hard to hold onto in the woods. They keep trying to take flight.

If you haven't done any mods to the engine and your 2.7L engine "runs like shit" on regular octane you have a warranty issue.

Chris, are these dyno numbers or are they published somewhere? ANd you can't assume anything based on how the engine is tuned refereence an FJ. The engines may be tuned exactly the same but the intake and exhaust systems ARE different....just routing causes restrictions and therefore causes power differences between the two. Also, where does it say the numbers in the manual were based on 91 octane? If that is the case and they recommend nothing higher than 87 octane, then I would argue that my Taco is not performing up to the numbers they are claiming and I want my money back. Now if they came in and said that these numbers are based on 91 octane and that it is okay to use 87 at a penalty of performance, I would be good with that. If this is the case then I wish they would make it more clear. A 10:1 compression ratio would likely NEED a higher octane number to get maximum performance.

So really, my ultimate question is.....Is my truck making claimed rated power on 87 octane? If it is not and Toyota knows this, then they have severely mislead me and everyone that has bought their trucks based on this number.

I come form the Corvette world where they REQUIRE premium fuel for rated performance but then admit that lower octanes can be used but you will not be making rated power(PCM automatically adjusts timing and spark, etc). They make it VERY clear. If you are expecting claimed rated power, then you must use premium fuel. Now if the Taco gets rated power with 87 and gets even more with higher Octane, I am cool with that and I certainly hope that is the case....strictly from a legal standpoint.

My Taco is 5 days old and like any new "toy" I get, I read the owner's manual cover to cover. I did not come across anything suggesting any of this.

Makes sense because an '07 V6 Camry has the same engine as the '07 Lexus ES 350 .Yet the Lexus has 4 HP because of Toyota's premium requirement for the Lexus.
Bottom line is you can run 87 but for better mileage and top performance in a 10:1 compression engine,91+ is required.

I use 87. Haven't had it long so there haven't been on any road trips to try premium on.

Output is 236 h.p. on 87. 239 on 91. I got my info doing a quick Google search online. Also, in my owners manual, it states that best performance is achived with 91+ octain fuel.

89 Octane. Always for some reason. I seem to get more mileage out of 89 over 87.

On what page number are you all seeing that 93 is recommened? I'm not finding this in my manual (2008 Tacoma).

Also, where are you getting this "all the research was done on 93" stuff? I'm fairly certain you are all confusing what the manual says. If it says 87 minimum (Research Octane Number 91) that is NOT what the Tacoma was developed with. Research Octane Number or RON is a method used to measure the octane of fuel. In Europe, they almost exclusivley use RON which is why their pumps have numbers so much higher then the US. The US most often uses (R+M)/2 which is the average of the RON and MON (Motor Octane Number) methods of measuring Octane. MON numbers are typically 10 or so points lower because it's a harder test. So when you average them, that's why US pumps are in the 87-92 range while European pumps are in the 92-100 range.

I'm interested though, what page in the manual states premium recommended?
