Running 80w140 synthetic here and have noticed better bump absorption/axle ability to soak bumps without slowing down over 75w90. Seems the thicker weight helps keep the gears smooth over bumps and gives them a little extra momentum. Have not noticed any decreases in MPGs now after a few fillups

Changing the rear diff is probably one of the easiest maintenances to do, but i'd stick with synthetic.

I have been sticking with Lucas 85w140 after doing an ECGS gear swap. Transfer case has Amsoil in it but may switch to some Toyota Transfer 75W as its supposed to have specific formula no on else has, supposedly Toyota won't release it.

I am tearing into mine (front diff) this weekend and just ordered the Lucas oil.... how hard was it to get the speciality tool into the case to remove the needle bearing? (i've watched all the vids)

Honestly no idea. When I swapped diff's they had it already installed. There are a ton of threads on the topic though.

It doesn't look hard. I used a Blind Hole Puller that AutoZone used to have in its loan a tool program. It worked well, but the ECGS tool is likely a bit easier.

I used Amsoil 75W-110 on both diffs and the T-Case about 50K ago because I got a good deal on it. I'll probably do similiar next time.

OP if you (re)read post #35 and choose to use the heavier oil.
Be warned that using it in the front differential can result oil leaking from the breather.
Also take not to keep an eye on the differential breather on the rear axle.
It can/will get stuck with age and cause axle seals to leak.
Some guys (even Toyota techs) don’t recommend using the heavier oil.

I personal chose to use the heavier oil in my front diff.
I did experience leaks, and for that reason I do not recommend others use it in their stock gear set/differentials.

I am not arguing the fact one oil is better than another.
I giving my opinion backed with some fact.

I asked about the issue using the heavier fluid here.
Because it had been known to cause the front diff breather to leak.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...as-your-diff-breather-started-leaking.719245/

I chose take a chance and use the heavier oil.
The chance didn’t work out, it leaked.

I've got a 2023 just hit 10k miles got it at 6k miles , have had a whinning between 40 and 50 mph when let off acceleration or give it in that range . Sounds just like a diff when going bad or low I guess I've just heard that sound once in my life under a Durango and it was obvious where sound came from . Any way the whine seems to be getting louder dealership said it's normal sound it's aggressive tire sound . Also said they checked all fluidsxwhen I requested oil change at 7k due to sound and to check into sound . So pretty much a 10k service . Lied to me off the rip once said was normal tire sound . So looked at all my fluid check and fill areas not a bolt was turned nor any sign of fluid being added usually will spill some on frame somewhere or have a greasy hand print near by. . Checked oil had shiny small metal dust shavings , called requested to check into it very upset. Service department sent me to used car department they drained checked filter I looked didn't see much bud did see small sign . Asked me if wanted to drop oil pan Mayne anything if any has settled in their to make sure . 2 young idiots with picks amd pry bar are trying to pry off oil pan from factory seal . I had to walk away . 29 min later I check it's on the floor putting oil back in . Man or sorry boy proceeds to tell me they thought about it and saved me one and said it would void warranty possibly if had taken pan off , this is all on one property same dealership just one is for toyota services other is used toyota mechanic shop. So I'm like ok good point maybe I'll plan it some other day gotta go . Get home from 30 min drive pull in drive get out check mail and smoke and smell of Sulphur. .... trans mission cooler line squirming fluid on exhaust from being roughly gouged threw . Hmmmm I wonder how . Any way they denied they replaced line filledctrans which I already suspected wasn't full . .. so I did temperature check procedure drained the excess capped it off. . I decide today since since that day it's been kinda sluggish it's had a vibration since day one with the whining sound . I change my oil , . It took me an hour or more to get the filter housing off withcan impact and finally a breaker bar with 2 feet pushing all my might off driver tire . Almost broke it luckily I already had a toyota metal one tocreplace it . . The oil with only 3k miles was black withca dark red hue in the light and was over filled by a quart and Lil more maybe half quart . Explains the sluggish . New oil correct amount actually just 6 qt not 6.2 ish . Responded way more had milage in one trip reflected the difference by almost 2 miles a gallon . So now the toyota diff gear oil has arrived I open my rear diff poured oil into a lab squeeze bottle and started slow . No over flow so I pour it to it refill bottle go again. I used an entire liter or quart until it came out the fill hole , smelt so burnt it was stuck in nose for 2 days . The whinning is still their but slightly dampened but not much so I'm guessing the front is a quart low as well since the dealership workedcsoxhardcto check it and fill as needed . Yacright .. screw theme I don't wanna pay for and wait for the royota brand arw you guys positive in a 2023 I can use the 75 - 90 as long as it says the gl right cause that's all or closest I have found in all auto shops or some 140 . I regret paying for any toyota 4k dollar worth of warranty when they never cared in the first place . May try to get refund to go towards finance payment if I do . Any way I love the knowledge of the science behind earlier posts but I'm tired of over thinking this and not having dealership to back me up . It's just gonna be me doing oil changes and chasing down this vibration and whinning sound . May be drive shift carrier bearing it has sone play in it with just me pushing on it withclitle force . Enough that I'm gonna change it tocsee if helps with whine also going to eventually do the needle bearing front duff change to a solid bushing . Sorry long rant but I had to tell someone it's killing.me to go threw so much crap . I wanna throw a rock threw their window so bad or even worse the more I think about it . Just want my new truck to be new not a problem .. thanks for any advice if any . Peace ✌️
