What Size Tires do you guys run on your 4 cylinder

    I run 265/70R16's right now. Michelin MS/2's. The Michelin's are just about used up with cracks now starting in the side walls so I'm looking for a different tire. They have been on the truck for 5 years and I haven't checked the "born date" yet but they are on their way out with 50,000 miles. MS/2's are incredible and their off road prowess isn't bad at all for the average trail rider. On pavement, especially if it's wet pavement, and dry hard pack or even very steep climbs on dry dirt! I'd buy them again if I didn't live where I do and I've even thought about buying them again eventhough I do live where I do. They are that good.

    Until it gets nasty whether from snow, ice or mud. They are just as good on anything until the snow gets deep or the mud gets deep. I've driven the MS2's through sharp rock fields, snow, pretty deep mud, and have climbed very steep shale covered hills with them at 4500 rpm as well as everything else and have never had a puncture or any other problem. However, it's time to get something more appropriate for where I live where deep snow and ice are the norm 6+ months out of the year. That includes deep mud as well and I'd rather not have to worry about a sidewall puncture when running through the rock beds.

    Size matters and right now I'm thinking that some Cooper ST Maxx's or BF Goddrich AT KO2's are what I need. Since I have a 2.7 I'm leaning towards 245/70R16 in the Maxx's because they only weigh 6 pounds more than my MS/2's and aluminum rims down the road can make up a difference if I want to spend the money on them. The 245's are only about an inch narrower than the 265's and the circumference will stay the same so wishing for a re-gear as I have for a few years in stock trim won't get any worse.

    I've dreamt of 4:56's ever since I bought this truck used from my dad in stock form. Will I ever do it? I don't know but for the time being tire size matters along with performance in the elements I have to deal with and I'll go with what works. For me a narrower tire will do the job (I hope) when it comes to something as heavy as an ST Maxx or any other AT tire. 2.7's are gutless enough especially at 7000 feet. Losing an inch in width probably won't cause me any grief and will actually be better in deep snow and mud so it's going to most probably be 245/70R16 for me.

    That size does work well. Even with pretty much lesser tires or less clearance it's necessary to either slow down or speed up to get through or over "obstacles" with street tires like MS/2's. It thrashes the vehicle too much. Mine is a daily driver as well but when I first got it I thrashed it a little. I was amazed where I could go. I can only imagine where those with highly modified Taco's can go. Actually, I've watched many a video that shows what they can do.

    For me the stock tire is just fine. I go where I can go and don't go where I can't or where I'm going to have to beat the truck.

    I've done it many times for decades. It's always a mistake unless you're a millionaire or love being in debt. The further you get away from "stock" the more problems you will have. If you want to have a certain vehicle perform the way you want it to you have to buy that vehicle. Most of us can't do that so we get what we can afford. That's why I stay as close to "stock" as I can with my Taco. No one can make a Tacoma into a Hummer or anything else because it was engineered to be a Tacoma, not a Hummer or any other radicalized government sponsored vehicle. That's my point.

    The bottom line is, if you are rich, you can play with your Tacoma and make it into anything you want as your toy. If you're not? You can't. I'm happy with mine just the way it is and the way it will be in the future.

    I've got the 255/80/17 cooper stmaxx and love them. I just pulled a 5x8 uhaul 8 hrs through partly mtns. Granted here on the east coast we don't have mtns like y'all do. It's an automatic and I shifted out of OD for the trip. It did ok actually a little better than I expected

    I don’t have it anymore. That truck was a 27l auto it did fine on the highway and off road it just couldn’t tow anything. I think that was mainly the auto’s fault
