I have been complaining for awhile now that I want to get a new truck but I am still having trouble deciding.

What would you guys do in my position.

    Current truck: 2008 2x4 access cab SR5

Desired truck: nice 4x4 trd (probably sport) 6speed man. double cab

    Options:

    1. Keep truck

    Pros: save $$
Cons: not happy, no 4x for northern Canada winter, gutless.

    2. Buy 2007 - 2009 used trd

Pros: cheaper than new, can get certified used, 4x, more power :)
Cons: used - millage and wear and tear

    3. Buy brand new 2010

Pros: new, can get exact truck I want
Cons: price, issues with 2010 (seems to be quite a few), 6speed man no good?

    4. Wait til 2012

Sounds like there will be a new design in 2012, so that might be worth waiting for. Also perhaps a hybrid, thats something I would want to check out.

    Pros: new design
    Cons: thats so far away!

What would you do? I have price as a factor on all of these, but I am making a healthy income up here so it is not something that would hold me back from getting the exact truck I want.

if you buy a brand new one right now ... they will come out with a new one in 2012 it may be so good that you would want that then ...

haha oh god. stuck on a beach with the tide coming in...thats one of the last places I would want my beemer to get stuck.

Yea I love the current design of the tacomas, but what if 2012 is ever better  I don't want to get one now and then be wanting to get a new one in less than 2 years, I know they hold their value very well but with domestics being practically given away used vehicles just aren't worth as much.

    I voted option 2.
If you can find a certified used with a clean title and low mileage I think you would be well off, especially being undecided. Then again you have to look at the price difference. When I looked around my neck of the woods any late model (2007+) tacos that I saw that were close to what I wanted weren't much cheaper than a brand new one. The resale value is just that good I guess ;)

How do you know that 2012 will bring a new design?

Did I miss recent information on this?

Kinda difficult to tell YOU what to do. We don't know your finances, job security, other financial obligations, etc. If you are making decent money, be sure you are saving enough. If you plan to have kids, you will need at least $200,000 to send them to a decent college. Do you own a home? If not, think about putting money away for a downpayment. These are all things to keep in mind.

Whats wrong with the 2010's? I have a 2009 and it doesn't have any major issues. The tranny TSB? Big freaking deal...people are up in arms about it and most wouldn't even notice it if they didn't read it. Suspension TSB? Big freaking deal...you can add an $80 leaf to your $30,000 investment to give you the added hauling capability.

What makes you think the 2012's won't have major flaws - especially being a new design? Hybrid....that sounds complicated and I wouldn't want to own the roll-out model.

Yea I would buy a hybrid used after more is known about the quality of them. I'm sure the 2012s will have issues, but a new design is temping to wait and see.

Financial situation is fine. I'm only 23, no kids in the near future. I am saving up for a house too. I gross over 10k a month so I can still save up a good chunk of money even with a new truck to pay for. So I factor in money because I want a good bang for my buck but it's not something that will hold me back from what I want. The nice thing about money is that you can always make more :)

Im leaning towards a certified used if I can find exactly what I want somewhere close. Im also going to look into prices in the US versus Canada. Might be worth a day trip with a buddy.

Good idea i was looking for 4x4 TRD packagae either one dint matter DC one whole month dint find a decent one then my second option was 4x2 TRD OR DC after 2 months of searching i found one for a decent price and got it .... so you are on the right track no harm in buying a used car

The only thing I have come to realize in this forum is that the guys in canada are having to wait a couple months to get their trucks. And If you buy new up there you sounds like you might get it towards the middle of winter. I think everyone should have 4wd capabilities because you never know when your going to need it. Iim sure you can find a used one somewhere around that you like. Just do a lot of research

I'm working in Northern Alberta right now for Lafarge. I started here working in the field as a summer student (on the crusher, aggregate analysis, surveying, whatever else) and now I'm working my way into an office / finance position hopefully.

Winter is really starting to pick up here so I'm thinking I really need to get a 4x sooner than later.

That way you can trade that one in when the new model comes out and you will be happy with what you have for now. Seems like the best of both worlds to me.

Well I am sure Canada is different. But here in NY, used is a wash. When I bought my old 08, I looked for a used one and the diff between used and new was at most 2k. Made no sense to get used.

But like I said, Canada could be diff.

honestly id go option 2 but this is with the mind set u are having u can get a used one very nice for less money but also when the new 2012 models come out u can trade this one in if u keep the miles low it shouldnt effect the trade in value too bad

From my own experience about getting a used truck. These used Tacoma are so expensive, not worth the saving, especially the certified ones.

What issues are you talking about with 2010? I've been on this board only less than 2 months so I might not have read everything but I didn't see any major complaints.

I think it was mostly tranny issues I was reading about the 10s, especially the 6sp man. which I really want (I'm not an auto fan), I can't remember exactly though

I disagree. You don't take a hit on taxes and the depreciation driving off the lot (although small with the tacomas)...atleast in GA you don't have to pay taxes on a used vehicle...not sure about other states or canada. If you shop around you can find a good deal. I bought my 07 double cab sr5 4x4 6spd manual with 43k miles a few months ago it had one scratch on the whole truck and a ding on the back bumper where he backed into the trailer tongue, immaculate interior for $20k. Its average resale value averaging KBB, edmunds, NADA today is around 23k.

Get a new one, one that you want. Down pay as much as you can to ensure positive equity in it. Then, if 2012 comes out with a model you want, dump the 2010 for it.
