I might be trading in my 2016 for a 2017. And if so, the new truck is going to be silver. My A.R.E. CX series cap is colour-matched to the current Magnetic Grey DCSB I'm driving.

I'm on the fence with the cap after a year. It's great for road trips, but now I can't haul the dirt-bike. If I were to do it all over again (and had another 10k just lying around), I'd get a dedicated Flippac or Habitat.

I am not at all skilled in painting, and don't have the right place to do it for now. Is it worth get it re-painted to match a new truck?

    Sell it?

Seems like everyone sooner or later faces this, what are your thoughts?

Make up your mind on whether or not you want to keep it. If you decide you do, then paint it when you have the extra cash. If not, list it here on TW where you will get a better price for it than craigslist. You’ll get the most for it when you find someone with an MGM local to you. Just going to have to be very patient, maybe sit on it for 6 months.

    Why trade in a 2016 for a 2017?

I can't live without the waterproof storage you get with a topper. I use a cheap utility trailer for anything large or too dirty, it's easier to clean a trailer than the truck anyways. My Harbor Freight 4x8 trailer's going on 8 years, 3 sets of tires, and tens of thousands of miles. I added a toolbox to the front, a wood decking with tiedowns, and extended the tongue. It's been great to have.

    Same situation as you.

I am gonna sell mine. I don't want a camper anymore. I have no use for it. I only got it, since I already was lowering the property value around here by owning a truck, having a camper distinguished me from all the pool boys and gardeners.

But I am tired of the camper, so its going up for sale.

Possibly trading in since I'm now commuting to work and will certainly go WAY OVER allowed mileage - I can trade in for a newer one with higher allowance and avoid a huge penalty later down the road. And the 17's have that snazzy power rear window...

I also like the water and theft proof quality of the shell, but its gets in the way often enough. I too like a trailer, but don't have where to keep one for now. I shell I could foreseeably hang in the garage. A trailer would be really tricky to store. Yeah, I know a Flippac or Habitat is just as convenient to store as a basic shell, but we would find a way - man those things are cool...

Anyone have an opinion of a shell done all in bedliner-type paint would sit on a silver double cab?

Not a silver, but there are a couple lined shells on this page. Also, see the most recent page (320) has a white truck with a lined one. I have seen pictures recently of someone on here with a Quicksand 3rd gen w/lined shell, but of course can't find now.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/show-me-your-shell.13598/page-104

I would go ahead and get quotes for both painting/lining a shell, and then you can decide what kind of loss you would be willing to take. I got a quote for around ~$450 for LineX (black) on a shell, and $800 for color LineX (did not know that was even an option). I was in the opposite camp, though (looking to purchase a used one, and deciding on total cost difference).

If you are not sure you are happy with it or may not want a cap on your new truck, park it in the garage/shed/storage. Run without it or with one of the possible replacements so you can see which you prefer. That way you don't take a bath on it and then wind up buying another after you decide it was really the best option.

FYI, a good body shop can color match it to your new truck for likely a lot less than the loss you would have if you were to replace it with a new prematched one.

If the dirt bike is all that is hanging you up, they make hitch mounts for that.

Located in Toronto area. I had a dirt bike carrier for a while, not a confident ride. Trailer would be best, but for now don't have where to store it. And yes, this is my first and probably last lease...

    Softtopper?

This is what I’m leaning towards if I somehow come up with the cash, that is unless I got it insane deal on a hard shell..

Best of both worlds just not fully secure compared to a hard shell, but the utility factor is huge with a topper and only $700+\- compared to 1-3k..

And yeah, just sell your old one on here or CL, priced right it should go fairly quick.

I was looking at a soft top but security is the main problem. For now I'll be waiting to see about repainting the shell in bedliner. If its not too handsome a cost, I'll keep it. Thanks to everyone for the tips

Until then, anyone in the GTA area, keeps your eyes peeled - might see a 1 year old A.R.E. CX shell up for sale...
