I am looking at double cabs with 130-140k miles. What service should they already have had done?
Water pump, timing belt, brakes, shocks, spark plugs, fluid changes? Others? Thanks.

2005 and some 2006 have head gasket issues. I would definitely go with a 2007 to avoid this as it’s an expensive job.

From what I’ve seen, used Tacoma’s are rarely 100% gone through and all the maintenance boxes checked. They are known for being bulletproof, so that + ignorance leads to many owners not doing the recommended maintenance.

Luckily, all of these things are pretty simple and inexpensive if you know how to turn a wrench.

If I were you, I would check for rust ANYWHERE, grab and wiggle all suspension components, check that the proper fluids have been used, and look for any burnt/re-taped wiring in the engine bay. These trucks get modded a lot and everyone thinks they’re a mechanic and know what they’re doing.

You can tell a lot about an owner and how much they cared if the truck is missing covers, trim pieces, or has stains/cigarette burns.

No timing belt/water pump at 90k like in the 4.7 Tundra?

No, we have a timing chain and our water pump is fairly easy to access from what I’ve read.

Also, check around the rear wheels for an signs of gear oil leaking, it will run out the drum brakes, can be an easy fix if it is only the seal but much more expensive if the bearing needs replaced.

Where in the country are you? Biggest thing is the frame, potentially needing replaced or already replaced. Also front wheel bearings.
