I would stick with the Tacoma. The only Ranger that I liked was the one with the Tremor package. The new Nissan looks good though but I don't know much about their trucks.

If I got a Ranger and had any trouble with it I would post about it here.

I heard about the redesign, all the renderings I have seen look like Ford will reuse the same cab. I don't know if it will be more of a refresh of the same platform or an all new Ranger.

If I was bothering to get something with an automatic I would look at the new Nissan long before Ford or Chevy.

    The Tacoma (Surprise, right‽).

I am a fan of Ford and have owned an assortment in the past but my main consideration between those two is resale value. Not the most exciting reason but I have realized that my own needs exceed the payload of either of these vehicles (which is very easy to do). If thats' not a concern for you and feel confident you'll have it for awhile then either is probably fine. They are both old designs in need of an update so it's kind of fair game.

When I bought my '05 I got the same BS from the 1st gen crew. Were they right?

The 2016 Ecoboost in an F-150 had tons on overheating issues right from the factory. You couldn't pull a boat up the canyon without having it go into limp mode to cool off.

I test drove the Ranger and the Tacoma.

I liked the ranger (gasp). Better acceleration, much smoother transmission.

Challenge was I wanted a DCLB. Ranger was AC with LB, or DC with SB. Pick one for 2021.

For long-term reliability and resell ended buying the Tacoma. The 2.3 EcoBoost needed walnut blasting the intake ports. About a $400 service at 80,000 miles. I still feel the Tacoma is a 300,000-mile drive train. 2.3 EcoBoost about 120,000 miles.

I had a 2018 3.5liter twin-turbo cargo van. What a blast to drive. So I like Ford but went with the Taco.

A 2005 tacoma also was no where the msrp of a decently optioned f150, Silverado or ram like today.

I can tell you my buddy is seeing a lot of turbo issues in the older ecoboost ford v6 engines. Once they get up in mileage your looking at some major service work.

However the last sentence that you referenced didn't mention price. "And I'm not sure the new ones are as good as the old ones"

truck for truck the 3rd gen is not in the same class as far as reliability compared to the 2nd gen. 5 years after the 2nd gen came out, the Tacoma as a whole had A lot less issues compared to 5 years later on the 3rd gen.

Have a link to that information I would like to read further.

Personally my '05 had wavy rear glass replaced under warranty twice, then they offered me a slider when they couldn't get it right. I bent the weak tail-gate loading a motorcycle, also replaced under warranty. Leaking timing cover was outside of warranty unfortunately.

My '18 has had no issues. Hell my clutch pedal doesn't even squeak like the '05. Not in the same class indeed.

Starting issues, something fuel related. Never got it actually repaired but I think it was bad fuel injectors? Soaked spark plugs, fuel heavily diluting oil, cylinder discoloration, etc. This is my thread on the whole thing. Last post is the ultimate resolution. There’s some even worse videos that I got after this one where the truck complete stalled out w/o starting.

I am happy with my 2016 SR5 AC (50k miles) and will probably wait until the next generation Tacoma comes out before replacing. I hope they come up with a hybrid or electric version which would motivate me. Long time and satisfied Toyota customer.

I love some Fords, my 17 F250 and my 18 150 were great trucks. Tacoma is great all around and my 21 is my 4th one. We have about 8 brand new Rangers in our motor pool and I’ve used one a few times when my piece of shit Durango was in the shop. Power is great with the Ranger and it’s fun to drive on the road but it rides like SH!T!!! I might as well get another F-250 if I wanna ride something that stiff. The Tacoma rides nothing like the F-150 but it sure beats the hell out of that new Ranger FX4 setups that we have. Don’t know if they come with a softer riding options but geeeezzzzz!
