Study on it and get back to me. Koreans didn't have a say in the matter. North Korea was actually more prosperous than the south for more than 20 years. Before the Korean War, the US had to put down a few insurrections in the South to unite the countries. Korea and the US weren't the best of friends after 1905, and WWII didn't change that. We imposed our will because we could.

I'm sure you're right. That was a long time ago and I'm pretty sure the south is confident in the spot they're in now because of us. Fortunately I live about 3 miles from one of if not the largest refineries in the world so if shit does go down I probably won't have to worry about it for long.

We screwed Korea in 1905 when we didn't support a mutual defense treaty against Japan, but we had invested a lot in Japan and encourage them to spread out on the continent, especially with their success in the Russo-Japanese war. Teddy Roosevelt sold out Korea for his love of Japan. Post WWII, we put a lot of effort into rebuilding Japan, and left some Japanese in power in Korea, much like Patton used Nazis in Germany post WWII. Many South Koreans weren't impressed and we helped kill 100,000 or so before the Korean War to keep them in order. Also our protection of unit 731 didn't sit well with many of the political types in Korea.

US foreign policy in the Far East is actually very interesting when you look at the last 150yrs and see where we are based on where we've been. Many people don't realize how much of this country was built on the opium trade in China that was sanctioned by our government. Our involvement with Japan and how it led to WWII should be a required study by all foreign service people. We have carried a big stick for a long time.

There will be no winners in a war with North Korea. Just massive human suffering and cost. The cooler heads in the US know all this. But in the meantime it's a great tactic for a deeply unpopular President in political trouble at home. Hey, I'm an outsider, but that's how I see it.

That sums up most wars. If cooler heads prevailed, almost all wars could be avoided. Problem is politicians are the ones making those decisions. Their interests aren't always that of the masses.

There will be no winners in a war is absolutely right. We are targeted by this country and must fight back, there is no way to win without fighting. It's a fucking double edged sword but sometimes you have to deal with it.

Well, perhaps you can take a flight to South Korea, and embark on an apology tour on behalf of the U.S for false assumptions. The South Koreans would love to be reunited with N. Korea, you seem sure if it.

WTF are you talking about? Seems you missed something along the way. We were discussing history, not present day. Keep up. The Korean War that was being referenced was almost 70 yrs ago. History. Yeah, I know, you have to read about it, but it can be done. It is interesting to note though that when Japan repatriated some Koreans in the late 50s, they chose North Korea over South.

What's next? You gonna say since the US Army is no longer killing Indians it didn't happen?

If we hadn't divided the country in the first place, it's possible the whole country could and would be more prosperous than the South is today. Hard to know what would have happened. But to deny we created the two Koreas is just ignorance. History plays a part in how things are today. Some people are just bent on repeating the same mistakes over and over. I bet there are plenty of Koreans who wish for a prosperous, peaceful, united country over what they have today, but maybe you're right and both sides prefer it the way it is.

I suck at history too, I just like things that relate to WWII. It's hard not to go back to Commodore Perry and think what if.

There's going to be a big what if after this is over I'm afraid. I voted Trump and would do it again. I think what we are coming into was inevitable. We have the lesser of two evils.

WTF are you talking about. You seem to be stuck in the past. Ask S. Koreans if they want to be reunited with the North. Pay attention to what I wrote.
If we hadn't intervened in WWII against Germany in the first place, it's possible they would be more prosperous under Hitler Germany. Hard to know what would have happened.
