First thought was bird droppings but given nothing was on it no clue what would cause this.
I did notice during the week when I washed it a slight scratch in the same spot, nothing deep though looks more like a scuff.
    Now? This

No clue what would cause something like this. Ate away at the clear coat down to the paint. Not sure if this is something that would be considered a defect in paint? Truck only has 2500km on it. I can't see a scratch causing this, but nothings dripped on it or anything. No rain past few days other than some light snow last night, not even enough to stay on the ground.

Really weird, and biggest eye sore, that I see every time I walk up to the truck now. Not sure if dealer will repair it or if I'll have to pay out of pocket for it...

Only possible thing I could think of given the change in temperature last night was somehow water got under the clear coat do to the scratch and then froze and caused this? Its completely smooth though. Doesn't even feel like anything is missing.

    Dealer won't pay for it.

I'd see if I could find anything that matches that shape. Maybe a glass or crystal object you park near that could have caused a focusing of light on it that burned the paint?

My first thought would be chemical but anything liquid would have dripped down. There is a very distinct shape there.

Thats the "dreaded" 2-tone or multi tone paint we get on the MGM .... as apposed to the "normal" 2 tone MGM color...

Woah.. that doesn't look right. Seriously I'd take it to the dealer but take a lot of pics first. I've seen re-paints from the dealerships that look absolutely like shit. Like 2 different colors of shit.

its too cold and has been cloudy up until today to have it be some sort of burn.

If the truck was a year old or something I wouldnt be so bothered but at just over a month old to have something like that?
Really seems like a defect in paint or something. Figure I'll go by tomorrow and see what they say, worst thing that could happen is they say no.

Really wondering what it would cost to have it repaired if I am stuck paying out of pocket.

Looks like someone took a lighter to your car.

Good luck with repairs. In my experience, metallic flake is a pain in the ass to paint match. Fender will likely always look off unless they blend into hood and door.

Have you tried looking through a magnifying glass? Maybe a pin point hole that caused that - notice it getting bigger?
Good luck at the dealer- hopefully they are going to do right by you and fix it at no cost to you.

Did you get the protective film on it? If so it might be something that caused delamination like moisture plus sunlight or temp change.

You MIGHT be able to take it to a paint shop of your choice since Toyota doesn't do body painting in house... just an idea.

Yep I've seen dealer jobs before.
Drove me crazy my old jetta was repaired by the dealer since previous owner had the fender scratched or something. No carfax record of it, dealer ended up telling me after I noticed the unpainted spots on the fender under the hood where the screws are, clearly showing the fender was removed and what not. In the sun after a wash you could see the difference in color from fender to hood.

yep that's what I'm afraid of. But figure best chance would be at the dealer using the same paint as factory instead of a random body shop.

Besides a slightly off color is probably less noticeable than that.
There is a slight scratch you can see in the second picture on the left of the centre dot portion. That's what I'm thinking. The scratch which was from stones getting kicked up by a big rig on friday on the highway, caused moisture to get under the clear coat. And since it got below freezing last night some water got under it and froze causing that. Only possible thing I could think of other than some sort of acidic liquid on it.

    nope.

I think some film comes standard from factory for canadian spec since there is a clear film on the rear fenders.
I know canadian spec gets a lot more standard than the US, like door sill protectors, mud flaps etc

even if it was where toyota covers half the cost I'd be willing to then. Anything to fix this.
Its pretty much impossible not to notice every time I walk up to the truck since its on the drivers side. Unless I approach from the rear.

At first I thought it was something was on the truck that would wipe off then noticed it was the truck.

Looks like a burn in the paint from someone that used a buffer on trying to remove an imperfection or scratch. Probably wasn't as noticeable at first, but day by day just got worse. I've been in the auto body biz for 20 years.

but hasn't been touched by any detailer and has only had one wash so far from myself.
No waxing or polishing yet as its been too cold to do so. Only gave it a wash to get the salt off since it warmed up during the week one day.

Maybe not since you've owned it. Probably happened at the dealership. It's a burn from a buffer for sure.

I would take it to a body shop of your choice, and have them confirm that it's a burn in the paint. Then, take it to the dealership and explain to them your situation. Hopefully they'll take care of it.

Plenty of sanding / buffing occurs in the factory. Could have been a poorly trained operator, happens all the time. Shame that you can't prove you didn't take a buffer to it, good luck, keep us updated!

maybe don't mention this to the dealer- I would guess that this has been "cooking" for more than two days-
More likely, and probably from before you took possession- I would pursue this in a business like manner with the dealer- good luck.
