Was VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) standard from 05 and on, or still optional on some Tacomas? How can you identify? Looking at buying mostly a Prerunner or 4wd, ideally 4cyl - would like to avoid VSC if possible.

You do NOT want to avoid VSC.
    1) It is disabled with the push of a button,
    2) It is responsible also for ALSD/TRAC function, which gives you more traction when needed.

All that it is, is yaw sensor and a special program that runs on the ECU that controls the ABS, so not having it does NOT give you any reliability improvements (**EVERY ONE of them has ABS). I believe it was around 2009 when it became standard programming.

Consider situation; you pull off the road on an uphill slope. On the side of the road is ice, but the driver's side wheels are on pavement with good traction. You try to go.
Without VSC/TRAC: you spin wheel on the ice and start sliding backwards.
WITH VSC/TRAC: you drive forward and up the hill.

I have an 07 and do not have VSC. I think it was introduced from 09 and up. My buddy has the same trim as mine but 2011 and he does have VSC.

09+ VSC was on all models.

    05-08 was an option.

VSC doesn't change the fact that ABS will still actuate and modulate the rear brakes when in a low traction situation. I think the ABS switch mod may be down your alley.

I did the abs mod myself a year ago and it is quite a lifesaver, especially down here in the coast when I get into pretty hairy situations at the beach.

A lot IF you are stopping.
But in our case. We are not stopping. We are attempting to achieve forward progress.
Once a tire breaks free, it spins freely until we let off the gas or apply the brakes.

BTW, I’m not disagreeing with you. I know what you are talking about.
I believe we have pretty much the same truck?

yeah im just talking off the line traction on ice. before I had winter tires I wouldn't even need to give it gas just let off the brakes and my tires, well one tire would start spinning.

VSC, TRAC/ALSD, and ABS are all just routines within the same program on the same piece of hardware.

As was said, optional on 2005-2008 (depending on model, wasn’t available on the X-Runner until 2007 for instance,

VSC OFF switch was added for 2007 models.

Dunno about the VSC, but it goes hand in hand with A-TRAC which is pretty cool. Works like a quasi-front locking diff as it attempts (very successfully if used within its intended parameters) to stop the spinning wheel, directing the power to the non-slipping wheel. The downside is that it can overheat the ABS pump during hard/continuous use.
