I can't imagine paying near 50 grand for a jeep.

    Getting there...
Ditto on pretty much everything that's been said. Get what would suit your needs better. Go drive both. I have a friend who has a '12 Wrangler 2 door softtop (not a Rubicon, Sport maybe?), and while it was fun, I wouldn't want to live with it. I've borrowed it a few times and the +'s I noticed were AWESOME turning radius, peppy engine, decent stock radio, and the backseat is alright if it's just one average size adult.. Just driving it around made me feel like it'd be quite the off roader. However, there's almost no cargo room and the back seat would suck after driving for a while. That was reason enough to steer me away. That and the fact that it had less than 15k miles on it and random things were wonky/loose. His response was always "it's a jeep thing" haha. Haven't driven a new 4runner so I can't comment. In the end, go drive both and pick the one that you can see yourself living with.

This is true too! Just because we all agree on the tacoma, doesn't mean we have the same taste on other vehicles .

Every list I've seen has the FJ on top. ~80% value retained after 3 years.

IMO you either want a Jeep Wrangler or you don't. You can't really compare it to anything else because it's in a league of its own.

I had an LJ Rubicon and it was awesome off-road, and I'm sure the new JK's are even better.

We have the TE 4Runner now and would never think about trading it for a JK. We don't rock crawl, or have any desire to jack with a removable top that can be a PITA. It can be fun, but PITA when you have to put it on or take it off.

I suggest renting a Jeep for a week to see if you can live with it long term. They're fun, but I wouldn't DD one ever again.

I know it wasn't one of your choices but the FJ is very capable and I found it to be nearly as roomy inside as the Rubicon. You owe it to yourself to check out the FJ, same basic front end as the Tacoma, but more power.

For modding, the Rubicon is king, and will rule all offroad. However, the FJ will hold it own (biased here since I have one).

Between the two, I would vote for the Jeep. I would even consider the new Grand Cherokee over the 4Runner. I rode in one up Cleghorn today and its pretty cush.

I agree with socal4x. Check out the FJ. It would be a good middle ground.

If you're driving it a lot, get a Toyota. Jeeps(yeah, even the new ones) drive like CRAP. Total crap bs shat. The rubicon is maybe a little more capable off the lot. But if you want to enjoy driving it, get a smooth driving Toyota.

I kept my Tacoma and bought a 2012 4Runner Trail with KDSS. Loved it, but it was so nice I felt inhibited using it off road. So I traded it for a 2013 Rubicon.

Having done all that, I would advise that if this is a vehicle that will be seriously wheeled, get the Jeep. If it is move of a family vehicle or DD get the 4Runner Trail. Both a really nice vehicles.
