Hey guys, I am curious what the consensus in here is on Double Din dash kits for a tacoma (mine is an 08). I have a DNX5160 and they put in (I believe) a Metra dash kit - it is textured silver. The radio basicall bolts to the stock metal mounting brackets and the dash kit slip over it but I have 2 concerns. There is a small gap on the bottom that you can kind of see into and the head unit itself , although mounted securely, seems to vibrate from going over the road (you can feel it if you put your hand on it). Is that normal? WHat kit do you guys prefer?

I mean, it looks ok but it feels like it could use more support somehow...:(

Anyone notice any difference between the dash kit 05-08 and the 2009. There seems to be a slight price difference in Amazon.

I have the one from cruthfield also. It also vibrates to, and has small gaps on the sides.

That Crutchfield kit looks to be made by Metra. There is a gap on the left of the HU and plastic mold flash at the top where it meets the dash just like a Metra...

I just got my dash kit from Amazon. I notice a slight color difference. Has anyone tried painting the kit to color match the rest of the dash?:(

There are 3 choices that I'm aware of. Scosche which attempts to match the darker silver colored trim, but not well. Or the Metra textured in either silver or black.

    I've tried all 3.

The Scosche fits ok, but uses plastic braces instead of the stock metal ones. With a heavy double din it will of course vibrate a bit and I found the edges of the face starting to squeak/rattle. Bothered the hell out of me. ...and the color matching is noticeably off.

Metra Silver. As seen above looks pretty decent if you want to stick with the stock silver texture. But...the texturing is not a perfect match either. You'll notice that it's different than the texture below it on the stock A/C controls, but it's close enough that nobody will notice unless you point it out.

Metra Black. This is what I finally decided on.

Also, the Metra kits allow you to use the stock metal brackets which will hold the heavy dbl-din better. No squeaks yet.

Here's my current setup with the new Z120bt installed...

Same kit here. I got it from Crutchfield. There are no gaps but the head unit is pretty deep so it doesn't snuggle in like some of the other DD units I've seen.

I have a metra texture dash kit. I paid 18 bucks shipped for it off ebay. A lot of people have complained about every type of these kits including these but i am very happy with mine. It doesn't rattle, fits perfect and looks eom. For the life of me i cannot tell you why other people have had problems

I'm not sure which dash kit I have, got it from the dealer when I purchased my head unit, but the face plate rattles like crazy and I can't stand it. It's silver and has the texture so I guess it could be the Metra kit but from what I'm hearing the Metra owners haven't been having problems with rattling. Any suggestions to fix the rattle?

That looks about like the Metra Kit I got from Amazon. It doesn't fit my Kenwood DNX5140 for poop and the clips that snap in to the dash are very low quality.

I've got an AI kit on the way; I've been pretty happy with their stuff with past vehicles.

I thought I'd throw up my review of the Crutchfield Metra textured silver Double Din Dash Kit. I got the Kenwood DDX319 head unit.
It was pretty good and easy to install for free with the head unit, but here's what I found:

    • The clips that it came with didn't actually snap on to the back of the kit, I had to make the slits bigger so the clips would snap onto the back of the kit.
    • The hazard button was rubbing against the side of the hole so I had to trim that down so it wouldn't restrict the movement of the button.
    • The kit came with plastic mounts for the head unit, I didn't trust them so I used the stock metal brackets so I had to epoxy the plastic frame that goes around the head unit onto the kit.
    • The kit comes up above where the trim around the vents are.
    • The frame mentioned above still leaves a slight gap around the head unit.
