    It seems like all the older Toyotas I see and even some new ones the paint is peeling. I have a 2002 and the paint is peeling on the hood and roof which is understandable because the truck is 18years old but some of the guys I work with the paint on their trucks are peeling as well. the trucks they have: 2008 Tacoma blue, 2006 Tacoma Silver and 2010 Tundra Black. If anyone knows any good paint shops in SoCal please let me know! Also does anyone have any idea on costs for a paint job? thanks!

    The price of 280 days of UV, I mean sun, a year. Garden Grove autobody (Stanford Ave in GG) did a nice repaint of my 2012 car's hood/roof/trunk. Be advised - Tony (Toan) runs small one-man shop so he specializes in doing panels versus a full repaint. Very happy with Tony's work. I'll take my Taco there when it's roof and hood are due.

    Nobody takes care of their paint these days. You should be putting a REAL wax (not spray on) at least once a year. Especially on the roof as the wax gets stripped off with the windshield wiper fluid, which is why those always seem to go first.

    It's also because most car manufacturers are forced to use EPA friendly paint since about 2000.

    I got the same problem with my 04. Hood and roof are gone. I might bedline those in the future.

    I have a 2004 04 white 040 and hadn't washed it since before 2012 and only a few times between '04 and '12. I left the dirt on it to protect the paint and just washed then buffed the heavy oxidation off it for the first time a few weeks ago (Dec 2019). Was fully surprised that it looks essentially new after buffing it out. Sure some chips and scratches, but have to give props for 040 white, it seems pretty bomber given I did absolutely nothing to protect it except get it dirty and never garaged it.

    <edit>
    Also I never put any fluid in the windshield washer except purified water from a sink filter. Never any ammonia/windex/etc. which I suspect could cause problems over time as mentioned above.
    </edit>

    No issues with paint on my 17yr old 74k mile Tacoma , this is the OEM paint and has a deep glossy shine

    I know the early second gens are notorious for paint issues, I don't recall seeing any first gens with issues though.

    I'm having clear coat issues on the bed rails. I'm not sure if I should scrape off the pealing coat to keep water from spreading the issue. I have no idea how to contain this small issue before it becomes a whole clear spray. The rest of the truck looks amazing as I clay bar it and use high quality wax twice a year along with spray wax/detailer in between. It does sit in hot Southern California sunlight year round.

    I had a clearcoat on a shell fail from high pressure washing in an automated car wash and it looked exactly like that but the paint could be restored. I had to clean up the flaking clear coat with 600/1000/1500 wetordry and magic erasers then used the rattle can spray on 2k clearcoat with a respirator and it came out nearly perfect where I bothered to feather the clearcoat edge perfectly and was visible where I didn’t. You can find that clear on Amazon for around $25 per can. The failing clearcoat was progressing and needed to be fixed as it was worsening monthly.

    Adding some duplicolor first would likely get that back in shape.

    I bought my truck a few years back from a dealer and pretty sure they sprayed the clear coat way too thick or at least it looks as though it was. I do notice when it rains the trapped water between the clear and color coat spreads it quicker. I'll try your technique before my idea of pulling the plastic bed liner and rolling on a liner which I would coat the the tops of the bed rails with the roll on liner paint. Are the magic erasers the kitchen types. Thanks for the tip.

    Along with the wiper fluid and UV, another cause of paint deterioration is shooting over your hood. Especially rim fire, it eats away the clear coat. It's better to NOT use your hood as a shooting rest.

    A good full paint job, 5k and that’s on the low end of good. My paint guy who does very high quality paint work gonna start at 7k.

    I had my tundra done for 3500 and it looks killer. 5k if I wanted to have the bed all clean and without waves, but a rolled over truck it doesn’t matter. It looks great and he uses ppg paint. That was full colour change and jamming. Only thing I didn’t have painted was the engine bay

    Did he remove windshield, door glass, all trim, remove bumpers, fender flares, headlights, tail lights etc. that’s where it gets costly. My guy takes back down to a shell, doors off tail gate off. I’ve seen some great 2500-3500 paints jobs and some shitty ones too. It’s all about prep and what your looking for.
