My taco is my daily driver.... That said I drive 90 miles a day and the 2.7 5 speed is getting about 19mpg with 30x9.5r15 e rated aggresive tires on aftermarket wheels.

Really debated about selling the truck but can't really replace such a complete vehicle for 6k....which is about all I would get for it.

Is 19 good for these trucks...would going to stock wheels and a less aggresive tire help?

19mpg for any Toyota truck is awesome. Especially with larger tires. I believe it's rated 18/21 city/highway.

My 3.4 L M/T gets 17 mpg. If you're driving 90 miles, five days a week, 52 weeks a year at $5.00 per gallon that ends up as $6,158 per year in gas. If you bought a vehicle for $3,000 that gets 38 mpg (twice as good mpg) you would end up even (neglecting any profit you made from going to a cheaper vehicle). Finding a vehicle that gets that gets 38 mpg for $3,000 is going to be a tough find I would think. It totally sucks to spend so much on gas but it is hard to justify swapping to a more fuel efficient vehicle. You have to drive a long time to get your money back in the end. The same logic applies to tires. If you spend $650 on tires to get 2 mpg improvement (unlikely) you would still end up spending more overall during the year (by about $100). I'd do what I could to resolve your commute or get a higher paying job. Easier said than done...

Going back to stock tires will get you to 21-22 mpg. But you'd have to buy a lot of gas to pay for the difference. I wouldn't take off perfectly good tires. But the next time you need tires that is something to consider.

Don't panic, ride this out. You aren't likely to find anything that actually gets 38 mpg in the real world anyway. I'd keep what I have and add a 2nd vehicle when the time is right. My son commutes roughly 100 miles round trip every day. He has a "nice" family car but drives a 2009 Honda to work that gets 30-32 mpg. He paid $2500 for it. He saves his "nice" car for when he needs a nice car.

Keep on the lookout for someone getting rid of their stock tires. Tons of people upgrade their tires and sell the stocks pretty cheap on craigslist, facebook, etc.

Is selling the Chevy and buying a commuter an option?

Those look pretty bald. But also, those are 30.5 inch tires. Figured you'd want to be closer to Stock, which i believe was 225/75r15, or 28.3". Getting closer to stock would drop your width, weight, and gearing, which for better mileage would probably be a good thing.

Yea, I wouldn't buy them for the tires, but not a bad price for the wheels. AFAIK, the stock tire size for 4x4 and Prerunner 1st gens was 265/70R16, which is 30.6" according to a tire size calculator.
