Hi all, I come to your lovely thread seeking recommendations/advice. I just paid of my Taco a few weeks ago and almost immediately read through this entire thread. Now I’m seriously considering getting an old GX to do silly things with, since my Taco is my daily driver and sees too many highway miles and long road trips for 35’s.

Having read through everything on here, my only real question is what’s better for the stereotypical overland build style…the GX 460 or 470? I’m not too familiar with the differences. After reading this thread and based on my ideal budget, I’m thinking something around 2005/2006 years hopefully with no nav. Any advice on 460 vs 470?

    Thanks fellas.

Went from 35 to 32. Tank’s too heavy and love to drink.

They are pretty similar. 460's are newer and have more creature comforts. They are also more expensive. 470's have a 4.7L belt driven timing system, 460's have a 4.6L chain driven timing system. They each have their own quirks and issues.

    I would've gotten a 460 if I could've afforded one at the time.

@SearArtist is pretty familiar with both, maybe he can chime in here.

Also, this thread had a bunch of content too...

I’m not a fan of 460 and I personally don’t like the body.

I’ll sell you my brolander ready 470 so I can go pick up a urj200

That’s a lot of good info, I appreciate it!! That will help me narrow it down I believe, or at least make a more informed decision.

Man you put some awesome work into that thing! I assume it’s the white one with bronze wheels in your previous post?

I didn’t see that first post with the photo until just now.

Thats a beautiful rig! I still have to figure out what my exact budget/year range is going to be.

    That’s another fine looking rig!

Yeah, my Taco only has 2 seats so another perk of getting an old GX would be to have something that I could put passengers in if the need arises.

i have both, what do you want to know? They’re very different.
470 is my favorite but for daily use the 460 is better all around (more room, comfortable, quieter, double overdrive, etc.)

Well that probably answers it, sounds like the 460 would be better suited for my needs.

I would ideally use it for relatively short camping trips. As in a few hours each way to and from the camp site.

My taco is my daily and I also use it for long haul trips across the country so I need to keep it relatively street friendly. I would enjoy having a second vehicle that I could make more off road oriented.

    I really appreciate the info.

Personally for off-roading the 470 is the better package IMO.

ultimately either one will serve you well. Depends how much you wanna spend.

    Okay, good to know.

It will be a relatively low budget build if I do buy one, since I’m still building the Tacoma out as well.

Exactly. I love my 470 since it's a bit more antiquated and I don't care if I damage it. I have a mild build on mine, so it is plenty comfortable for daily use.

I appreciate the input. I guess less creature comforts = less things that can malfunction.

That’s what made me switch from my Ram to my Tacoma in the first place.

If I had to buy one now to use as an overland/daily rig I'd get a 460. Newer, lower miles, fewer things to worry about(cracked dash, seat wear, timing belt) just as many if not more mods available. They also come with KDSS standard, a better transmission & slightly better gearing.

With that being said I love to daily my 470. Sometimes I commute 200 miles round trip for work and it's a comfy ride on basic Dobinson's suspension. I do have to deal with 15mpg fuel economy though.

I like the sound of more available aftermarket parts, a better trans and better gearing.

i will say the double overdrive is super nice.

parts aren’t an issue for either model, they’re both extremely popular and there is anything you can think of available on the aftermarket.
