Probably when you put it in 4wd the longer studs will handle the power and torque better than shorter studs. Just a guess though. I'm not as lucky as you guys with being able to bolt up the whole bearing assembly. Since I have a 1st gen. Man that would be nice!

Here was my experience: driver side front bearings were going out, noise was progressively getting worse, had to take my 2010 PreRunner to the dealer to get the rear suspension safety recall done and asked them how much it would be to replace the front left bearing - that's when I learned they will not press in a new bearing and will only sell you/install a complete hub assembly. Dealer price was $850 for a single hub/bearing assembly, plus $450 for install! I looked around to see if I had accidently driven into the Lexus service bay...

Jersey Built Hubs to the rescue! While looking for the right parts to order from Rockauto, and then planning to find someone local with a press, I found this thread and recognized it for the good deal that it is. I placed my order for two new front hub assemblies on 26 May, and it was received 16 June. Put the Hubs in yesterday and the bearing sound is gone! Since you have to pull the rotors to get to the hubs I also dropped in a new set of slotted/drilled rotors from PowerStop. And since it was becoming auto-maintenance day I replaced my fogged/cracked headlights with a new set with the black bezel. And I did all of that (two new front wheel hub/bearing assemblies, two new rotors and pads, two new headlights) for less than the dealership wanted for a single wheel hub assembly (parts only)!

Thank you to nj636 for providing this service to the Tacoma community!

Order placed. I'm taking care of all the little maintenance items (new batteries, bearings, tie-rods, etc.) and getting the ol' truck ready to pass along to a new owner. Someone's hopefully going to be very happy in the coming months. :)

The longer studs are aimed at those using a wheel spacer. When you put a wheel spacer over the standard length stud, you are losing thread engagement of the lug nut.

The ARP studs are aimed at those using an aftermarket wheel/lug nut that need the absolute highest strength lug studs. ie: people that jump their trucks.

Thank you for posting your experience. Some people don't recognize the savings on the Prerunner setup until they contact the dealership or an incapable shop. You know that the Prerunner not only requires the same pressing that the 4x4 does, but it also requires a SST for the large lock nut on the back of the assembly.

    Another successful DIY Prerunner story.

Thank you again for your support and for posting a review of your experience
