New 2017 Tacoma SR5 owner and looking to change wheels, my question is do i need to stay with the same 25 offset if I'm not going with a lift and I also need an opinion on going from 16" to a 17" wheel. I checked the stickys and came away with a headache.

    Thanks, Joe

Offset means nothing without knowing the rim width...
    What is your goal?

Welcome! That wheel stuff can be confusing as hell. The main reason to push the tire further out is for wider tires, so it won't rub on suspension components. If you plan on sticking with your current tires, then that's not as crucial. HOWEVER, I would still recommend getting a wheel that sticks out a little bit, that way if you decide to get bigger tires in the future, you can keep the same set.

Anything above a 16" rim is going to be more geared toward street performance.

In general, a lower offset moves the tires outboard (negative offset even further out) assuming the same rim width.

Stock offset on the Sport 17"X7.5" rims is 30mm

When going with wider rims, the offset will need to be lower to keep the inside of the tire from rubbing things.

One thing that must be taken in to account is brake caliper clearance. This is not reflected in any of the rim measurements, and should be verified with the manufacturer.

I'd like to stay as close to stock suspension as i can with a taller tire and I would like a little more lift without going with a lift kit. I was looking ata 17" purely for cosmetics. I've been looking at the TRD wheels, I'm assuming they would fit with out a problem, but some of the after market wheels have negative to positive and no offset. the ones I'm looking at are 16 x 7.5 with 15mm off set

Mess around with an Offset/Backspacing Calculator like this one.

    https://www.customwheeloffset.com/tire-wheel-backspacing-offset-calculators

You'll see that our stock backspacing is ~5.5". You don't want to go any higher than this. The wheel's that you're looking out will fit just fine, and even poke out about 1/2". If you want a bigger tire, look into 265/75r16. This is +1" over stock and you'll have no issues.

EDIT: Just noticed the brake caliper clearance mentioned above. That's only an issue with certain 16" wheels.
