Don't know if this is a common occurance but I noticed the other day that some of the finish had come off of my stock rims. When I took it back to the shop that had done work on my truck after an accident to ask them if this was something they had done and they claimed that it was caused by old wheel weights. Is this really a thing?

Are they the clip on metal ones? I'd imagine that would happen over the course of 12 years. I prefer the ones that stick to the inside of the wheel

Very common for the clip on wheel weights to leave a mark on the rim if you do not tell them not to most tire shops put that style on as it is easy and fast. Though, pictures would help the marks should be right on the first radius after the edge of the rim and maybe on the bottom of that radius equally spaced lines radially from the center of the rim.

Of course it is. Its why top flight shops use coated weights. So that doesn't happen as readily.

Salted roads will multiply the damage too.

Save your breath. Its the customers responsibility to request stick on weights or pay an upgrade to coated weights.

Old fashioned clip on wheel weights will do that over time, especially in a snow exposure climate on a 12 year old truck ... IMHO it's not the shop's fault either. But I wish you luck.
