This may be common knowledge round these parts, but new to me. Finally took my truck wheeling after about 6 months of ownership. Pleasantly surprised how well it will chug along in 4H in 1st gear with no input from gas or clutch. Prior to this i was a little disappointed with the slow revving(heavy flywheel), now it makes complete sense. That is all

Welcome to TW fellow 4cyl 5spd 4x4 owner.

I have to say my experience is actually the opposite of yours. While it will chug along just fine in 1st gear high, I often need to slow down for a rock, or a rut, and then I'm going too slow for 1st gear so I have to use the clutch. I've found it's much easier to chug along in 2nd gear low at slightly higher rpms, which gives me plenty of flexibility to speed up or slow down without using the clutch. 3rd gear low seems almost identical to 1st gear high, so that ratio is still available if needed.

    Cheers

i will definitely try this next time, it just seemed silly(at the time) to use low, when it didn't seem necessary. You make a good point, and i know felt what you are talking about. Since it was first go around with this set up, was tryin to feel it out.

I often use 4L long before I need 4 wheel drive, just for the lower gearing. If it were a V6 or an automatic it would be different. But I love the powertrain, wouldn't trade it and it does everything I need it to.

Another vote for 4-Low and go. I shift to 4L immediately when getting off road 80% of the time, it's a much more enjoyable way to drive the 4cyl/5 speed combo. The only time I leave it in 4-HI is street driving in the snow or a flat dirt road (if needed)

Im all for 4lo too when wheeling. I have a throttle controller on mine, i plan to test it in ECO mode 4lo this summer. Should crawl nice and slow. I am interested in the 2wd Low mod too, im waiting until it is available again on here from a member.
