I am currently running 245/75/16 tires and seriously thinking about upping to 265/75/16s. The tire store I usually use cautioned against this. They are concerned with:

    1. Speedometer/odometer being wrong. But there are solutions to this like that Hypertech Calibrator, ScanGauge, etc. Also I could just keep track with GPS if all else fails.

    2. Loss of power. But can't this largely be addressed by regearing? And if so at what point do you realistically need to start thinking about this?

    Thanks all.

do a search for the 4:88 mega thread. you may find info there useful. doubt you will see any delta on the odo for that change in tire size. As for regear - spend the $ on the OVTune (several threads for manual and auto trans). Then after adding the Tune consider regear. I have both. JMO.

    I wouldn't consider a regear with 265/75/16.

You dont need a regear for 265’s. You have a v6 shouldnt your truck have come stock with 265s. My 4 cylinder Tacoma came with 245s stock and i put 265s. Hardly notice any power loss at all and the speedo is only off by like 1-3 mph. You can go 285s without a regear.

A regear is totally unnecessary for a swap like that.

Not sure about the 3rd Gen, but I ran 265/75R6 Duratracs on my 2010 4.0/Auto with absolutely zero power issues. The speedometer will be off a little bit, but not by much. When your speedometer says you're doing 60 you'll actually be doing 62, but as long as you're mindful of that it's not an issue.

As far as I'm concerned, your shop's employees are on drugs if they think it'll cause problems with your truck. :notsure:

regear is more of a 285s and up thing. 35s it's essential.

Tire store doesn't know what they are talking about. 33's on my old 1st gen and never felt the need for a re-gear.

I’m running 255/85r16 on my Offroad and it feels good to me. A little sliggish off the line but it’s a truck. I’m getting 18 on short daily commutes 21 mpg on longer commutes, with sliders and canopy / shell on the bed.

big wow after both. did the gearing first to improve towing my 1500lb popup. made a big difference. just added OVTune. Shifts like butter. Accelerates and holds speed and gear. No need to mash the pedal - unless you want to. Mileage is up too. 100% better than stock.

Fuck em. They are idiots. Many converters online about speedometer to wheel diameter calcs. Need more power press the gas pedal. 26570s come stock on some models.

Do these require any lift or trimming?

Not on the stock Offroad suspension. Don’t know about the sr5. Check out the skinny on skinny thread, 255/85 owners experience is good too
