I just purchased a 2008 Doublecab TRD Off Road Package Tacoma, beautiful truck, it has about 175 miles on it right now and I unfortunately do not know a lot about cars but I am trying to learn so I am wondering when the first oil change should happen. I have heard that after the first 500 miles, I have heard the first 1000 miles so if you all can give me some insight as to when is the best time to do it I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I believe the rule of thumb is to change out the oil at it's first 500 miles to clean out the metal pieces that might be in the oil from the break in period.

Your truck should already be broke in by the time you get it. In the olden days you changed your oil after you built a motor, still do just not as many people building motors. I changed mine at 3000 miles then at 6000 and now I change it at 5000 miles. After your first oil change you may want to look into changing to synthetic oils. There are a few good threads about this and basically if you change your oil regularly it almost doesn't matter what oil you use.

Oh yeah and welcome to TACOMWORLD Blake2035

I'm getting a complimentary one from the dealer... they suggested doing them at 5k miles, but said to bring it in at 3k for the first one.

After reading several posts on the topic I decided to get my oil changed at 1000 miles. When I called the dealership to make an appointment the service guy said it wasn't necessary. He said 5000 or 6 months which ever comes first. He actually said he didn't want to take my money if it wasn't necessary!

Id do the break-in oilchange at 3,000 miles and then change the oil every 5,000 miles.

I did it at 5500 miles and switched to full synthetic. I meant to change it before 5k, but ran out of time... oh well. Manual says 5k, so I'll do it every 5k. :)

    Nothing at the moment
I did mine at 1K, plan to do my next at 5K, and then every 5K after as described in the manual. I wanted to switch over to synthetic so that's why the first was done at 1K. Personal preference.

I just dumped the oil today @ 1600 KM (1000 miles) on my new 2009, I put in Amsoil synthetic. I will change every 5000 miles, even though Amsoil claims you can go 24,000 miles! I will also be changing all drive line fluids to Amsoil synthetics soon.

This is my oil change schedule for a new truck.

    1st oil change : 3,000 miles
    2nd " " : 6,000 miles
    3rd " " : 10,000 miles
    every 5,000 miles after that.

That makes it easy for me to remember when oil change is due. 10k, 15k, 20k...
